President Obama
Launches White House
Internship Program
President Barack Obama
President Obama
announced the launch of the
White House Internship
Program for his administra
tion and announced that
applications are currently
being accepted for the sum
mer of 2009.
“This program will
mentor and cultivate young
leaders of today and tomor
row and I’m proud that they
will have this opportunity
to serve,” said President
Obama. “I look forward to
working with those that are
selected to participate and I
want to commend all who
apply for their desire to
help through public service
to forge a brighter future
for our country.”
The 2009 Summer
Internship program runs
from May 22 to August 14,
and the submission dead
line is March 22, 2009.
Those interested in apply
ing to the White House
Internship Program must be
US Citizens, eighteen years
of age on or before the first
day of the internship,
enrolled in a college or uni
versity (2-4 year institu
tion) or must have graduat
ed from college in the past
two years.
Interns will be placed
in a departmental office for
their internship. A list of
departments in the Office of
the President and the Office
of the Vice President where
interns could be placed
includes White House
Department of Scheduling
and Advance, Office of
Cabinet Affairs, the White
House Communications
Department, the White
House Office of Public
Liaison and
Intergovernmental
Affairs, the Office of the
First Lady, the White
House Office of
Legislative Affairs (OLA),
the Office of Political
Affairs, the Office of
Management and
Administration,the Office
of White House Counsel,
the Domestic Policy
Council, the White House
Office of Presidential
Personnel, and the Office
of the Vice President

The National SCLC
Comes to Savannah
On February 27th and
28th the national office of
the Southern Christian
Leadership Conference
came to Savannah for a two
day summit entitled
“Infusion Summit.”
The Summit started
off Friday with a press con
ference and was followed
by two days of training in
Kingian conflict resolution,
and ended with a packed
house rally in Screven
County that evening at
Abundant Truth Ministries.
On February 28th the
morning was kicked off
with the SCLC “Post
Inaugural Breakfast” at
Geneva’s restaurant.
The entertainment was
great from the Abeni
dancers to the smooth
sounds of Mr. James
Hudson Sr. electrifying
Saxophone. The speaker
for the event was the
Honorable Dexter M.
Wimbish Esq. who ener
gized and informed the
audience with a message
entitled “Don’t Sweat the
Small Things” which
touched on the impact of
the stimulus package. The
day ended with the second
day of Kingian Conflict
resolution training From
Mrs. Bernice Frazier execu
tive Director of the SCLF.
This week the
Savannah Coastal SCLC
will Travel to Selma
Alabama on March 8th to
commemorate the 44th
anniversary of “bloody
Sunday”. For information

March is National Colorectal
Cancer Awareness Month
and everyone in the region
can take part in promoting
awareness by wearing blue
on March 6. This year in the
United States, colorectal
cancer will kill as many peo
ple as breast cancer and
AIDS combined. Yet col
orectal cancer is 90 percent
preventable when detected
early through regular screen
ings. On March 6, wear blue
and tell your family and
friends why. Encourage
everyone to get screened.

Boy Scouts Honor
Morrison and Johnson
On Friday, February
27th, two outstanding com
munity leaders were honored
with awards at the Coastal
Empire Council Boy Scouts
of America’s 2009 Good
Scout Breakfast at the Hilton
Garden Inn, Savannah
Midtown.
Dr. Lester B. Johnson
received “The Distinguished
Eagle Award”, which is
given to an Eagle Scout who
has servedhis community
and gone above and beyond
to mold the lives of many,
many youth. Dr. Johnson,
Savannah’s first African-
American Eagle Scout,
taught Industrial Arts and
Mathematics at Beach High
School for 15 years and then
went on to become an
Engineering Professor at
Savannah State University.
Through Boy Scouts,
Education and Civic
Leadership, Dr. Johnson has
been the inspiration for
many of today’s community
leaders in the Savannah area
and beyond.
Howard Morrison,
retired banker, philanthropist
and visionary, was named
this year’s “Good Scout
Honoree”, an annual award
given to an individual who
has provided the youth of
our area their never ending
service and dedication to
Scouting.
Howard Morrison has
dedicated his efforts to
increasing opportunities for
local youth by promoting the
development of our high
technology business commu
nity.
The Good Scout
Breakfast is part of the annu
al local Boy Scout's Friends
of Scouting’ Fund-raising
Campaign.
