In May of 2009, the
American Cancer Society
Relay For Life will reach a
milestone: 25 years of com
munity presence and action
in the fight against cancer.
Since 1985, Relay For Life
has grown from the efforts of
one man - Dr. Gordy Klatt,
who walked, jogged, and ran
around a track for 24 hours
raising money for his local
American Cancer Society
unit - into the world’s largest
movement to eliminate can
cer.
Our local events,
including those in Chatham
Bryan, Effingham and
Liberty Counties, are just a
few of many that take place
in 5,000 communities in the
United States and in 19 other
countries around the world.
More than 3.5 million people
participate in this life-chang
ing event, which raised more
than $450 million this past
year to fund the American
Cancer Society’s mission.
We would like invite
you to “Show Us Your
HOPE” by participating in
the Relay For Life event in
your community. By joining
your local event’s planning
committee, starting or join
ing a team or volunteering
for the day of the event, you
are joining the millions of
others across the world to
demonstrate what hope
means to our community.
