SSU Softball Ends
Season
The Savannah State
softball team ended their
2009 season on April 17 with
a double-header loss at South
Carolina State.
The Bulldogs took the
opener 8-0 and completed the
sweep with a 9-1 victory in
game two.
Krystle Frost struck out
four batters in the opener for
SSU while Crystal Williams
and Tiffany Taylor had the
only hits for Savannah State
in game two. SSU ends the
season 15-31.
Tigers Lose 8th
Straight
Savannah State's baseball
team dropped a weekend
series at Norfolk State to run
their losing streak to eight
games. NSU won a double
header 13-12 and 8-2 on
April 25 and completed the
sweep with a 11-10 win on
April 26.
The Tigers traveled to
Mercer on April 22 and fell
6-5 and on April 21 SSU lost
to USC Beaufort 12-7.
Savannah State is cur
rently 23-24 and will host
Albany State on May 8.
SSU Runs At Penn
Relays
The Savannah State track
team participated in the 115th
Penn Relays April 23-25 in
Philadelphia.
SSU had a good show
ing with the men's shuttle hur
dle relay team finishing 9th
overall. Sharonda Redfield
placed 18th in the women's
triple jump.
The men's sprint medley
relay team was 27th, Marcus
Stallworth was 29th in the
men's 400m hurdles, Victoria
Burch was 31 st in the
women's 400m hurdles, the
women's 4x400m relay team
was 49th and the men's
4x400m relay team was 59th.
SSU Golf Finishes
Third
The Savannah State
men's golf team finished third
at the 5th Annual Morehouse
Golf Classic played April 14
at the West Pines Golf Club in
Douglasville, GA.
The tournament was
shorten by a day because of
heavy rains.Morehouse won
the event with a 300 while
Florida A&M was second at
307 and SSU's 316 was good
enough for third place.
Riley Baxter led SSU
with a 77 while Corey Brown
shot 79. Jamie Montgomery
and Tripp walker both shot 80
and Rickey Williams shot an
85.
Former Tiger
Arthur Mott
Funeralized
Former Savannah State
football player Arthur Mott
was funeralized on April 25
in Tifton, GA. Mott, 88,
played running back when
SSU was known at Georgia
State. While in school, Mott
was drafted into the United
States Navy, where he would
reach the rank of chief petty
officer during World War 11.
After getting out of
the military, he would pursue
his first love — boxing.
He went on to post a
13-1 record as a welter
weight.He had a 19-year
career as a head coach.
He won one state cham
pionship as a head coach, and
his teams would finish as run
ners-up three other times.
After Wilson closed, Mott
would go on to work as a
coach at Tift County High.
As an assistant at Tift
County, Mott helped the
Devils win state champi
onship in 1983. He was
inducted into the Georgia
Athletic Coaches Association
Hall of Fame in 2007.
