Mrs. Eva Poole Celebrates her
101st Birthday

It was certainly an
evening to remember as
family and friends of Eva
Gertrude Phillips Poole gath
ered at the Macedonia
Baptist Church in Sandfly to
help her celebrate her 101st
birthday on Saturday, April
18.
A beautiful program
was put together by Mrs.
Poole's children and grand
children which afforded
family and friends the oppor
tunity to participate and
show a little love for their
beloved Eva.
Mrs. Poole sported an
off-white suite and hat, and a
beautiful corsage presented
by her children.

Washington D.C., and grand
daughter of Mrs. Poole
served as mistress of cere
mony for the evening and
did a wonderful job of enter
taining the packed church.
The program consisted

and Senior Choirs of

of Macedonia.
Mrs. Poole was also
entertained by a perform
ance by the VSP Praise
Dancers, a trio comprised of
her granddaughter Vanessa
Tremble, and great-grand
daughters Paris Sheppard
and Shama' Johnson.
Reflections were given
by Mrs. Poole's daughter
Gwendolyn L. Walker,
Poole's nephew Wesley
Phillips, and Poole's long
time friends Joe Harris, and
Claudette Butterfield.
Also, Poole's former
pastor Rev. Richard Hall,
and current pastor Rev.
Jerome Stokes both shared
fond memories of Mrs.
Poole.
Mrs. Poole remarked to
the crowd “God is so good,
and I thank him for all of you
being here with me today”.
After the celebration, a
reception followed in the
church social hall.
Bom April 23, 1908,
Eva Poole was one of 13
children bom to Ellen and
John Henry Phillips in
Tarboro, South Carolina.
She and a brother,
Marcus of Dover Delaware,
have out lived 11 siblings.
Marcus celebrated his 99
Birthday in March.
Mrs. Poole married
Fred Poole (deceased), and
to this union six children
were bom.
A son, James, and
daughter, Catherine both pre
ceded her in death.
Mrs. Poole's greatest
joy comes from spending
time with her family, espe
cially her children, grand
children, great grandchildren
great-great grandchildren
nieces, and nephews.
The family thanks God
for Mrs. Poole's 101 years
and prays she will be blessed
with many more.

Jordan Selected as Professor
of the Year
Kenneth Jordan, Ph.D
Kenneth Jordan, Ph.D.,
professor in the Department
of Social and Behavioral
Sciences, was named
Savannah State University
Professor of the Year by the
Naval Reserve Officer
Training Corps (NROTC)
midshipmen.
The award was present
ed during the NROTC
Annual Spring Review on
April 16.
“To be recognized by
the students whose lives I
impact in the NROTC unit is
a great honor to me,” said
Jordan, who joined the
Savannah State faculty in
1989 as an associate profes
sor.
Jordan received the
Bachelor of Arts degree in
urban geography from North
Carolina College, now North
Carolina Central University.
Jordan attended the
University of California at
Berkeley where he received
both the master’s and doctor
ate of philosophy degrees in
urban geography and plan
ning in 1974 and 1976,
respectively.
Jordan has held numer
ous professorial appoint
ments including stints at
Prairie View A & M
University, Tennessee State
University, Norfolk State
University and Old
Dominion University.
He has also worked as
statistician and data analyst
for the U.S. Department of
Education in New York City,
The U.S. Bureau of the
Census in New York City
and the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers in Savannah,
Georgia.
He served as director of
the Master of Public
Administration Program
(MPA) at Savannah State
University from 1991-1998,
and associate director of the
MPA Program at Georgia
Southern University from
1991-1995.
Former chair of the
Athletic Committee at
Savannah State, Jordan was
appointed as the faculty rep
resentative to the committee
in Feb. 2009.
He is also the corre
sponding secretary of the
Faculty Senate.
