May Week
Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority, Inc. - Savannah
Alumnae Chapter will
observe its annual May
Week Celebration,
Saturday, May 2, 2009.
May Week will kick
off with “Celebrating our
Youth in the Arts and
Education”- Saturday,
May 2, 2009 - 11:00 A.M.
to 1:00 P.M. at the Jepson
Center for the Arts, locat
ed at 207 West York
Street.
This program will
feature the talents of local
youth in music, poetry and
dance.
Students from
Sonata, an organization
that raises funds to pro
vide symphonic music les
sons for students, will per
form violin and piano
selections.
Some of the other
performers will include
Aubrey Bryant Dance
Group, Kearah Gilbert,
and Sankofa Male
Chorale.
May Week is an annu
al event which focuses on
education and youth in the
community.
The highlight of the
local chapter's May Week
Celebration is its annual
scholarship presentations.
Savannah
Alumnae Chapter awards
three $1500.00 scholar
ships for academic excel
lence, one $750.00 schol
arship to a non-traditional
student, and one $700.00
scholarship for community
service.
Scholarship candidates are
nominated by their high
school counselors and
undergo a rigorous selec
tion process.
The May Week event
is free and open to the
entire community is invit
ed.
Complimentary parking
will be available in the
Robinson Parking Garage.
Also, as a part of this
year's May Week activi
ties, the Deltas will spon
sor the first Financial
Literacy Workshop for
sixth grade young men in
the Riser's Academy at
Hubert Middle School.
The young men will
learn and use money man
agement skills. On May 7,
2009 - 3:00P.M.-
4:00P.M., the first of a
series of workshops will
take place.
The program will
continue next school year.
Savannah
Alumnae Chapter will
open a Christmas Savings
Account at Carver State
Bank for each young man
in the program.
The young men will
be expected to make addi
tional deposits to their
account to meet their sav
ings goal.
At the end of the pro
gram, students will be able
to identify their goals,
explain why it is important
to save and how they
would like to spend their
money in the future.
Students will also
identify several different
savings options and meth
ods and determine which
savings option or method
is best for their immediate
goals, needs or wants.

Gallup Named Surgeon
Of The Year
Donald Gallup, M.D.
Donald Gallup, M.D., a
physician at ACI Surgical
Associates, has been hon
ored by the Society of
Gynecologic Surgeons
(SGS) as the Distinguished
Surgeon of the year.
Gallup has been at
Memorial Health for twelve
years and is professor, chair,
and program director of
obstetrics and gynecology at
Mercer University School of
Medicine (Savannah).
He is also the associate
director of gynecologic
oncology.
Before coming to
Memorial Health, Gallup
was professor and director of
gynecologic oncology at the
Medical College of Georgia
in Augusta. Gallup, a past
president of SGS, has also
served as president of the
South Atlantic Association
of Obstetricians and
Gynecologists (SAAOG).
The Society of
Gynecologic Surgeons is
recognized as a select mem
ber group of approximately
300 physicians representing
both private practice and
academic faculty—all
involved in teaching and the
practice of advanced gyne
cologic surgery.

Outstanding Service

Savannah Arts
Academy has been select
ed as the 2009 Savannah
Recipient for Outstanding
Service by a High School
by the Jefferson Awards-
Deloitte Youth Service
Initiative (YSI).
The award was pre
sented during a joint
press conference
Wednesday, April 22,
2009 on the front steps of
the Savannah Arts
Academy, with officials
from the Jefferson Awards
and WSAV-TV, the offi
cial Jefferson Awards
media partner for
Savannah.
The Savannah Arts
Academy will represent
the City of Savannah at
the National Ceremony
and Gala Event in
Washington, DC, June 15-
17, 2009.
Savannah Arts
Academy was selected for
best showcasing the pro
grams' seven deliverables
in the Jefferson Awards
Turnkey System and for
their philanthropic contri
bution to the community
and their school. Their
efforts have helped to
pave the way for greater
volunteerism in and
around the Savannah area.
The Jefferson
Awards Youth Service
Initiative is currently
operating in more than
125 high schools nation
wide in eight regions:
Charleston, Chicago,
Delaware, Central
Florida, Memphis, the
San Francisco Bay Area,
Savannah and Toledo.
In early April the
Jefferson Awards will
select one outstanding
high school as the nation
al honoree.
Each regional high
school, along with the
national honoree, will be
showcased as part of the
National Jefferson
Awards Ceremony in
Washington, D.C. in
June.
The Jefferson
Awards for Public
Service was founded in
1972 by Jacqueline
Kennedy Onassis,
Senator Robert Taft, Jr.,
and Sam Beard to create a
Nobel Prize for public
and community service.
The mission of the
Jefferson Awards is to
honor Americans who
have performed outstand
ing Public Service and to
inspire others to follow
their example.
The Youth Service
Initiative (YSI) was cre
ated in partnership with
Deloitte with the aggres
sive goal of helping to
double volunteerism in
America's high schools.
The strategy is to
create Jefferson Awards
youth leadership teams in
each high school that cel
ebrate great volunteers,
inspire others to get
involved and help raise
additional resources to
expand volunteer activi
ties in the areas of need.

Induction Banquet
The 2009 Greater
Savannah Athletic Hall of
Fame induction banquet is
set for Monday, May 4. 2009
at the Savannah Civic Center.
The 2009 Honorees

The GSAHF has been
in existence since 1966.
Savannah's Athletic Hall of
Fame takes pride in chroni
cling the rich and storied his
tory of sports in Savannah.
Housed on the second
floor of the Savannah Civic
Center, local athletes have a
plaque with their name, pic
ture, and contributions in
sports giving them a perma
nent place in Savannah's his
tory.
The Honorees are nom
inated by family and friends.
They are then selected
through a rigorous process of
by the members of the
Greater Savannah Athletic
Hall of Fame voting Honors
Court.

In Loving Memory of
Isabell Denmark King
Deacon Isabell Denmark King -
died on March 22„ 2009 in St.
Albans, NY at the age of 74. She
was bom in Savannah, Ga to Mr.
& Mrs. Robert Denmark, Sr.
Both parents preceded her in
death. A brother, Robert
Denmark, Jr. also preceded her in
death.
Isabell graduated from A. E.
Beach High School (class of 57)
and attended Savannah State
College. She moved to New York
and married Anderson King and
finally settled in St. Albans she
had an active life.
Isabell's funeral was held in the Presbyterian Church of St. A1 bans
on March 27„ 2009 officiated by Rev. Dr. Edward Davis. It was an
exuberant, heartfelt service based on the song, "May The Work I've
Done Speak For Me". Indeed Isa bell has done an enormous amount
of work for her family, community and church. Several people spoke
during the memorial reflections about Isabell's kindness and works
including clergy, church members, people from the community, peo
ple she has helped, family members and life-long friend from
Savannah Deacon Carolyn Hayward Stroman. Resolutions to honor
Isabell were read from the Deacon Board, Naomi circle and Key
Women of America. Inc. Isabell was president of the Queens Branch
of Key women in 2002. She served on numerous committees to
invest in children and serve the community. In recognition of her
good works the church's flower garden now bears Isabell's name.
Isabell love God and her church, she told her son that "she does not
want to receive accolades for any of he4r personal achievements and
the work she did in the church and community was her Christian
duty and she did it all as a servant who loved God dearly and Fidel
Brown, sisters, Ruby ones and Sarah Denmark of Savannah, Ga.
brother Herbert Denmark of Decatur, Ga, grandchildren Paul King,
Jr., Pauleseia King, Londaul King, Destiny Gonzalez, Sade
Rodrigues, Kelis Brown, Fidel Brown, Jr. and many
ffiends.Interment was done in Springfield cemetery, Springfield
Gardens, NY. May Isabell rest in peace. Her works speaks for her.
