Washington Signs
Baseball Contract
Savannah State senior out
fielder David Washington
signed a baseball contract
to play with the El Paso
Diablos.The Diablos play
in the American
Association of Independent
Professional Baseball.A
native of Bronx, New York,
Washington has started 41
of the 42 games he has
played in this season.
Washington is batting .325
with 40 hits, 39 runs, 27
walks, 20 RBI, 12 doubles,
2 home runs and two
triples. In the field he has a
.992 fielding percentage.

Savannah State golf coach
Art Gelow was one of ten
inductees into the Saginaw
County Sports Hall of
Fame on April 20. The cer
emony took place at
Saginaw Valley State
University. A three-sport
athlete, Gelow played foot
ball, track and basketball at
Arthur Hill from 1961
through 1963. He played
basketball for four years at
South Dakota, starting for
three years. As a senior, he
led the nation in free-throw
percentage and was named
Little All-America. He
coached basketball and
golf.
Gelow was inducted into
the South Dakota Coyete
Sports Hall of Fame in
1992. Gelow played basket
ball at USD from 1965-69.
Newton Inks
Football Contract
Cecil Newton, a offensive
lineman from Tennessee
State has signed a free
agent contract with the
Jacksonville Jaguars.
Newton is the son of Cecil
Sr.and Jackie Newton.
Cecil Sr. is a former stand
out safety on the SSU foot
ball team in the early
80s.Newton, a 6-2, 305 lb,
center from Atlanta, GA,
was a four-year letterman,
and part of an offensive line
that led the Ohio Valley
Conference in rushing in
2007 and 2008. He also was
part of an offensive line
that blocked for a
1000+rusher in 2006, 2007
&2008. In 2007, Newton
had 24 pancake blocks
along with 40 knock downs
and he only gave up 3 sacks
the entire 2007 season.In
2008 season graded out an
average of 90 % per game.
He had 30 knock down
blocks and did not give up a
sack, he was named to the
2006 All-OVC 1st team on
the offensive line.
Paige Inducted
Into Paine Hall of
Fame
Lester Paige was one of
five inductees into the
Paine College Hall of Fame
on April 30 at Candler
Memorial Library and
Conference Center on the
Paine campus. Paige, who
graduated with a history
degree, transferred to Paine
in 1971 from Southern
University. He graduated
from St. Pius X High
School in Savannah.
From 1971-74 Paige scored
more than 3,100 career
points with the Lions.
Paige, 58, also pitched for
the school's first baseball
team in 1974. He went on
to become a history
teacher. Paige also played
professional basketball for
three seasons with the
Washington Metros.
In 1992, the 6-foot Paige
began playing with the
American Mini-Trotters,
the world's smallest basket
ball team.Paige currently
works as a salesman at Kia
of Augusta. He also has a
role working as a drill ser
geant type under Lt. Col
Janet Zimmerman at the
Fort Gordon Youth
Challenge Academy. The
Hall of Fame class also
includes Meria Alexander-
Strange, Ann Magruder-
Dixon, Denard Morton and
former coach Ernest
Tolbert, who will be
inducted posthumously.

Farmers’ Market to Open in Forsyth
Park
On Saturday, May 9th
at 9:00 am, the Savannah
Local Food Collaborative
(SLFC) and its partners will
open a seasonal farmers’
market at the south end of
Forsyth Park.
The Forsyth Farmers’
Market(FFM) will feature
regionally grown, fresh food
and food products sold by
the producers.
Every second Saturday,
starting on opening day, the
market will host a health
pavilion featuring free
health, nutrition, and gar
dening lectures and work
shops.
The market will run
every Saturday from 9:00
am to 1:00 pm through
November 21st. The FFM
has joined forces with the 2
year old Starland Farmers
Market and will be the new
home for those food ven
dors.
Grace Badiola, the
Fitness/Wellness Instructor
for St. Joeseph’s/Candler’s
African-American Health
Information & Resource
Center, will present a free
lecture on the role of fresh
fruits and vegetables in
nutrition at 10:00 am and
again at noon.
Amy Schuster will be
conducting a free workshop
about vermicompost(using
worms to compost) at 11:00
am.
There will be a meeting
for people interested in com
munity garden efforts fol
lowing the second nutrition
lecture, facilitated by Kelly
Lockamy.
The first 50 customers
will receive a free reusable
shopping bag compliments
of Thomas & Hutton
Engineering Co.
The FFM will have
organic and conventional
farmers with a variety of
produce and will be capable
of accepting food stamps.
Many of the farmers will
also be capable of accepting
WIC vouchers from cus
tomers.
The focus of this mar
ket is primarily on offering
the entire community
access to healthier food and
educating people about that
food.
The longer term goals
of a community event like
this is to enlarge and secure
our local food shed, reduce
the carbon footprint of our
food system, and engage
the whole community in
more responsible con
sumerism.
The SLFC is partner
ing with the Coastal Health
District, Step-Up Savannah,
the City of Savannah, and
Healthy Savannah.
Members of the SLFC
have been involved with
several other farmers’ mar
kets in Savannah and feel
that the historic, iconic,
shady Forsyth Park, along
with an aggressive market
ing campaign will serve as
the perfect location to sup
ply food for all.
The Savannah Local
Food Collaborative is a
small group of local citizens
involved in various ways
with the local food system.
They came together in
part as a result of the
Mayor’s Healthy Savannah
Initiative.
