Obama
Picks
Sotomayor
for
Supreme
Court
Sonia Sotomayor
President Barack
Obama tapped federal
appeals judge Sonia
Sotomayor for the Supreme
Court on Tuesday, making
her the first Hispanic in his
tory picked to wear the robes
of a justice.
If confirmed by the
Senate, Sotomayor, 54,
would succeed retiring
Justice David Souter.
Obama had said
publicly he wanted a justice
who combined intellect and
empathy — the ability to
understand the troubles of
everyday Americans.
Democrats hold a large
majority in the Senate, and
barring the unexpected,
Sotomayor's confirmation
should be assured.
If approved, she would
join Justice Ruth Bader
Ginsburg as the second
woman on the current court.
Sotomayor is a self-
described "Newyorkrican"
who grew up in a Bronx
housing project after her par
ents moved to New York
from Puerto Rico.
As a girl, inspired
by the Perry Mason televi
sion show, she knew she
wanted to be a judge.
A graduate of Princeton
University and Yale Law
School, a former prosecutor
and private attorney,
Sotomayor became a federal
judge for the Southern
District of New York in
1992.

classroom, preparing to obtain a
GED if they do not have one, learn
ing culinary theory and safety, and
acquiring practical skills such as
budgeting, resume writing and job
interviewing. They spend anoth
er nine weeks in the kitchen for
hands-on culinary experience.
The food they prepare on a
daily basis at the Community
Kitchen provides meals to local chil
dren who are at risk for hunger.
The program cites a 55%
increase in enrollment for the first
quarter of 2009 compared to same
time frame for 2008.
Last year, the program trained
49 local students job skills giving
them the ability to earn a living
wage.
This was a 61% increase over
the number of students anticipated to
complete the course.

Obama
Names
Bolden
to head
NASA
General Charles Bolden
President Barack
Obama has named a former
shuttle commander as the
man he wants to head up
NASA.
Mr. Obama announced
the nomination of retired US
Marine Corps Major General
Charles Bolden on May 23.
A 1968 graduate of the
United States Naval
Academy (USNA), he
became a Marine Aviator and
test pilot. After his service
with the National Aeronautics
and Space Administration, he
became Deputy Commandant
of Midshipmen at the USNA.
Bolden serves on
the board of directors for the
Military Child Education
Coalition.
If the Senate confirms
his nomination, Bolden
would be the first African-
American to serve as NASA
Administrator and only the
second astronaut to hold the
position.
Bolden would replace
Michael Griffin as NASA
Administrator. Griffin
stepped down in January.
"I am delighted to see
that Charlie Bolden has been
nominated to be the next
Administrator of NASA,"
Griffin said. "A long time
friend and colleague, Maj.
Gen. Bolden has served the
nation all his life, as a mili

naut. During my tenure as
Administrator, Charlie served
with distinction on the
Aerospace Safety Advisory
Panel. He is a gifted individ
ual. NASA will be in good
hands."
