Junior League Awards Scholarships
During Annual Meeting
Savannah named
'Most Mannerly City'

Savannah, the Hostess
City of the South, was hon
ored as America's "Most
Mannerly City" during a cer
emony at Thursday's City
Council meeting.
Cindy Grosso of the
Charleston School of
Protocol and Etiquette pre
sented Mayor Otis Johnson
with the award, a glass vase
inscribed with the title.
"It's not an action, it's
an attitude, and Savannah
has it," Ms. Grosso said of
good manners. "It's a series
of very simple gestures, such
as holding the door for
someone, that conveys self-
respect and self-confidence."
The Most Mannerly
City contest was founded 30
years ago by etiquette expert
and author Marjabelle Young
Stewart.
In 2007, Ms. Grosso
secured the endorsement of
Stewart’s family to carry on
the contest.
The 2008 winner was
chosen based on results from
online and mail voting to the
school.
Savannah received the
award when our sister city,
Charleston, S.C. — in a dis
play of impeccable manners
— removed itself from com
petition after receiving a
Lifetime Achievement
Award from the school in
2007 following 11 straight
years of claiming the title.
"Charleston was gra
cious, but I hope next year
we claim the title outright,"
Mayor Johnson said. "There
is a reason why we're called
the Hostess City."
The Junior League of
Savannah awarded five
$1000 scholarships to the
following high school sen
iors from Chatham, Bryan ,
Effingham, Bulloch, Jasper,
Liberty , Glynn, and
Beaufort (SC) counties who
demonstrated a strong com
mitment to volunteerism and
outstanding community
involvement.
Scholarships are not
based on academic or athlet
ic ability and are awarded
each spring by the JLS.
These scholarships rep
resent a $5,000 annual com
mitment by the League to the
future generation.
In addition, a joint
scholarship with
International Paper in the
amount of $1000 was given
to an outstanding senior from
Johnson High School who
not only excelled in scholas
tic activities, volunteering at
Hospice, March of Dimes,
Dune Defenders, Upward
Bound, May Street YMCA
and much more.
Analicia Wallace from
Johnson High School will
attend Jacksonville
University this fall.
