Young Men of Honor
Members of the Young Men of Honor thumb through I am Barack Obama, a limited inaugural edition book presented to all
the students by the men of Alpha Lambda Boule . Each book was autographed by the author, Charisse Carney-Nunes.
The gymnasium at T.
W. Spencer Elementary
School was crowded on
Thursday evening, June 4,
2009, as parents, other fam
ily members, teachers,
school administrators, vol
unteers and community
leaders came to pay tribute
and offer encouragement to
the young men who partici
pated in the Young Men of
Honor program during the
school year.
The students were the
center of attention during
this, the Fifth Annual
Banquet for the program.
Attorney Jamal To lire
served as Master of
Ceremony. Throughout the
affair, he inspired, enter
tained, and educated the stu
dents and the others in atten
dance.
Eric Beba delivered
the welcome with the assis
tance of the Young Men of
Honor, who showcased the
French speaking skills
taught to them by Mr Beba.
Aljalik Miller, one of
the students recited a poem,
and Marisa Arnold thrilled
the crowd with a vocal solo.
Founded by Mrs.
Diane Jackson, a para-edu
cator at Spencer Elementary
School, the “Young Men of
Honor” program seeks to
change negative behavior in
young boys between the
ages of 9 and 14 by provid
ing activities that encourage
and teach positive behavior.
During the banquet,
Rev. Matthew Southhall
Brown, Jr. described the
purpose of the Young Men
of Honor program as an
attempt to broaden the cul
tural and social experiences
of the students, reduce at-
risk behavior, improve aca
demic performance, and
build positive self-identi
ties for the young men. He
said that these goals would
be achieved by creating a
nurturing environment
where the students will
observe and participate in
positive character building

Parkway Crossing
Business Center Opens
The grand opening of
the Parkway Crossing
Business Center was held at
noon on Tuesday, June 2 at
the complex, located at the
intersection of Chatham
Parkway and the Veteran’s
Parkway.
Senator Eric Johnson
was on hand to give
remarks, and raise the flag
which indicated the opening
of the center.
The property is being
developed by Jerry Konter
and sales/lease management
is being handled by commer
cial realtor Gary Mankin.
The theme for the
event was, “Where Small
Business Is Big Business.”
“Parkway Crossing
provides area businesses
with a unique combination
of flexibility, technology and
convenience for both
employees and customers,”
says Mankin.
He adds, “It also
affords strategic access to
Chatham economic hubs on
the southside, mid-town,
downtown, West Chatham,
and counties west of 1-95.”
Buildings 5 and 6 from
the Parkway master plan are
already completed.
Six additional struc
tures are envisioned, with
space increments from 800
to 9,000 sq. ft.

Obama
Reaches
Out to
Islam in
Speech
Pres. Barack Obama
Special From NNPA
President Obama’s
speech last week to more then
900 million people in Cairo,
Egypt was sufiiised with refer
ences of justice, tolerance and
dignity aligned with the Islamic
way of life and earned the com-
mander-in-chief respect among
Muslims by acknowledging
their contributions to world cul
ture and science.
Obama used his June 4
address as a vehicle for repair
ing some of the damage done to
America’s reputation as a result
of the Iraq war, U.S. treatment
of military detainees and the
lack of progress in Middle East
peace talks, and recalled that
Morocco—also a Muslim
nation—was the first to recog
nize American independence.
His presence in Cairo
made good on a campaign
promise to address the Islamic
world from a major Muslim
capital early on in his presiden
cy, and during a 55-minute talk
Obama often quoted from the
holy Quran.
Obama had stated during
a gathering earlier in the week
in the District of Columbia that
he wanted, “to use the occasion
[for] a broader message about
how the United States can
change for the better its rela
tionship with the Muslim
world.”
The president recalled liv
ing in Indonesia as a boy and
referred to Cairo as a “timeless
city.”
Obama said he seeks a
new beginning between the
United States and Muslims
around the world, one based
upon mutual respect and one
based upon the truth that
America and Islam are not
exclusive.
