Free Summer Concerts Return to
City Squares
The City of Savannah’s
Department of Cultural
Affairs is bringing back the
much-anticipated summer
series of free live concerts in
City squares.
Sixteen concerts are
planned from June 3 through
July 31. Concerts will be
held on Wednesdays and
Fridays at 11:30 a.m. and
will alternate between
Johnson and Wright Squares.
The concert series is
being produced by the New
Arts Ensembles (NAE), a
Savannah-based group that
showcases some of the
region’s finest musicians.
“This is a great oppor
tunity for both musicians and
audience members to share
great music without the for
mality of a performance
hall,” said NAE founder and
director Ricardo Ochoa. “It
is also a great summer activ
ity for families. The musi
cians involved love to per
form for children, which is
something that they don’t
often get the opportunity to
do in an evening perform
ance.”
The concert series
kicked-off on June 3 with
modern jazz group Silver
Lining in Johnson Square.
The concert line up also
includes: Roger Moss with
Eric Jones (Mercer stan
dards); Jimmy Wolling
(bluegrass); The Gina Rene
Quartet (Jazz); Norm
Cagney Quartet (Jazz);
vocalist Claire Frazier
(Jazz); Bottles ‘n Cans
(Blues); Lolintar Trio (Latin
Jazz); and Doug Cairn with

know that without Jesus, we
can’t do anything, but unto
him who is able to do
exceedingly, abundantly
above all that we ask or
think according to the power
that worketh in
us(Ephesians 3:20).
I am confident in
knowing that God is not a
man that He should lie, nei
ther the son of man that He
should repent... (Numbers
23:19). His word is spirit
and it is life, and he proves
that to us as we believe and
live it.
Each day as I live,
He proves to me that His
word is true because of life.
You see, I died on the
operating table November
23, 1990 at Memorial
Hospital while four heart
specialists were performing
an angioplasty to clear out
my main artery.
While operating, a
blood clot formed in my
heart and then ruptured
blocking everything. The
doctors said we cant explain
it, we can’t understand!”.
They wrote it up in in the
medical journal, and includ

Superior Court Judge
James Bass, Chairman of the
Social Action Committee of
Alpha Lambda Boule of
Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, Inc.,
introduced the speaker for
the event, Judge Robert
“Beau” Patterson.
A member of Alpha
Lambda Boule, Patterson is
President of Please Rise, a
motivational speaking and
training company.
After spending 30 years
in Public Law, the last 20
years as a judge in the
Denver, Colorado County
Court, Judge Patterson
retired and launched his
motivational speaking com
pany.
Judge Beau, as he is
affectionately known, was
appointed as a judge for the
Denver County Court in
1985. In 1998, Patterson
made history when he was
appointed as the first
African-American presiding
judge in the court's history.
Patterson used the pro
gram theme “You Can Count
on Me” to enthusiastically
challenge the students to
dream and start taking
actions to make their dreams
come true. He said that the
students should be clear and
focused in their efforts to
make their dreams come
true. “Identify the people and
resources that can help you
achieve your dreams and
don't be afraid to ask for
help,” he said.
Patterson had the stu
dents and their supporters
rocking as he ended his
remarks by leading the group
in a poetic rap that he com
posed to motivate the young
men.
Judge Bass adminis
tered the “Rites of Passage”
for those program partici
pants graduating from the
5th grade at Spencer. The
other members of Alpha
Lambda Boule who attended
the affair assisted him.
Judge Bass told the stu
dents that as they continue
their growth and pursue their
goals, he will assist any of
them who decide to go to col
lege.
During the banquet, the
students were praised, and
encouraged by leaders like
Pastor Gwendolyn Greene of
Gospel Truth Clinic of
Ellabell, GA, Spencer
Elementary School Principal
Andrea Williams and
Assistant Principal Jim
Roszkowiak.
Additionally, several
achievement awards were
presented, and the Boule men
provided each student with a
copy of Charisse Carney-
Nunes' Limited Inaugural
Edition of the book I am
Barack Obama, illustrated
by Ann Marie Williams.
Carney-Nunes, who auto
graphed each copy of the
book, attended Harvard Law
School with President
Obama.
Arrangements for the
books were coordinated by
Attorney Robert E. James, II,
who is also a Harvard Law
School graduate and a mem
ber of Alpha Lambda Boule.
This year, Mrs. Jackson
hopes to raise enough money
to take 30 young men and
their chaperons to Alabama
to visit historic landmarks,
including the 16th Street
Baptist Church and the Civil
Rights Museum in
Birmingham.
To assist with this
effort, Robert E. James,
Grammateus (Executive
Secretary ) of Alpha Lambda
Boule, presented a check for
$2,500. According to James,
Judge Bass informed the
Boule men of a letter from
Mrs. Jackson requesting sup
port for the trip, and several
of the members immediately
made individual contribu
tions resulting in a total of
$2,500.
The Boule men also
arranged, and paid for, the
delicious banquet meal
catered by MaRandy's
Restaurant, and at the end of
the banquet, Mayor Johnson
announced that the Boule
would pay for a weekend of
relaxation at the Westin
Resort and Spa on
That was one of sever
al things that our Gracious
God has done for me
through the power of His
word because he gave me
John 11:25-26, “I am the
ressurection and the life, he
who believeth in my though
he may die, yet shall he live.
And whoever lives and
believes in Me shall never
die”.
Do you believe this?
Glory be to God! I did and
still do. All Glory to God,
the Father, the Son and the
Holy Ghost, Amen!
Hutchinson Island for Mrs.
Jackson and her husband.
Throughout the school
year, the men of Alpha
Lambda provided speakers
and professional role models
for the students.
On November 19,
2008, the Boule men took
the students to the Jepson
Center for the Arts in four,
chauffeur-driven limousines
with a police escort. After
the tour of the Jepson, the
group headed to the main
office of Carver State Bank
for a pizza party and a tour of
the banking facility. They
also engaged in conversation
with several Boule members,
including Mayor Otis
Johnson, Dr. Joseph Silver,
William E. Stiles and Robert
E. James.
Established in 1904,
