Curtis Named AD
At Shaw
Jacques Curtis has been
named athletics director at
Division II Shaw
University.Curtis, a graduate
of Benedictine and Savannah
State, succeeds Alfonza
Carter who was reassigned
to another position at Shaw.
During his tenure as head
women's basketball coach at
Shaw, Curtis' teams accumu
lated a 194-82 record and
won four consecutive CIAA
titles (2003 to 2006), as well
as the 2008 title. Curtis was
named coach of the Lady
Bears in 2000. Prior to that,
he served as an assistant
coach at Shaw, before being
named the head men’s bas
ketball coach of his alma
mater, SSU in 1998, amass
ing a 20-34 record in two
seasons.

Savannah State sophomore
baseball players Courtrevez
McTier and Brandon
Webster have been named to
the 2009 Independent
Baseball All-Academic
Team. McTier, a pitcher, car
ries a 3.70 grade point aver
age while majoring in crimi
nal justice and Webster, a
first baseman, has a 3.49
GPA and is majoring in
mechanical engineering.
McNeill Hired At
St. Augustine's
Daryl McNeill has been
hired as the running back
coach at St. Augustine's.
McNeill was fired as head
football coach at Johnson C.
Smith in February after four
years. The Bulls were 7-3 in
2006 but back-to-back 3-7
seasons cost McNeill his job.
McNeill was head football
coach at Savannah State in
1997 and 1998. SSU went 7-
4 in 1998, their last winning
season.
Grambling To
Induct 25 In Hall
of Fame
On July 18, 2009 the first
group of 25 legends will be
inducted into the Grambling
Legends Sports Hall of Fame
at the Monroe Civic Center
in Monroe, Louisiana.

The Savannah Airport
Commission has been
awarded a Certificate of
Achievement for Excellence
in Financial Reporting by the
Government Finance
Officers Association for its
Comprehensive Annual
Financial Report (CAFR).
The certificate of
Achievement is the highest
form of recognition in the
area of governmental
accounting and financial
and international distribution
for all of its products.
Additionally,
PureSpectrum is discussing
potential licensing agree
ments for its dimming ballast
technology with lighting
manufacturers.

Perdue have reached a com
promise on his demand to
reduce the judicial branch's
budget by 25 percent.
The Governor has
agreed to withdraw his
demand, while the Chief
Justice and the state's judges
have agreed to withhold 25
percent from their June
budget allotment by defer
ring some current obligations
and expenses until the next
fiscal year, which begins
July 1.
The understanding is
that some of those expenses
would then be requested dur
ing the Fiscal Year 2010
Amended Budget process.
“I know that we are
both confident in the strength
of our legal positions,” the
Chief Justice wrote in a letter
delivered today to the
Governor. “But I also know
that as public servants our
primary mandate is to do all
we can on behalf of this state
we both love so much.”
In her letter, Chief
Justice Sears thanks the gov
ernor “for your willingness
to work with me in a way
that constructively addresses
a very real fiscal problem
while avoiding an equally
important constitutional
dilemma. It is my hope that
our state will be better off
with this compromise.”
Local Educators Travel to
Czech Republic
Armstrong Atlantic
State University (AASU)
faculty and Savannah-
Chatham County Public
Schools teachers embarked
on a four-week trip to the
Czech Republic and
Hungary on June 5 as part of
a cultural immersion seminar
funded in part by a
Fulbright-Hays grant from
the U.S. Department of
Education’s division of
International Education
Programs Service.
The 15 educators par
ticipating in the seminar
include representatives from
Georgia College and State
University in Milledgeville,
Columbus State University,
and Sarah Smith Elementary
in Atlanta.
All have teaching expe
rience in the areas of human
ities, social sciences, educa
tion or business.
The seminar is
designed to develop intercul-
tural knowledge, skills and
attitudes that will be applied
to enhance curriculum and
classroom instruction to ben
efit students in the long
term.
This is the third
Fulbright-Hays trip spon
sored by AASU’s Office of
International Education in
the past six years.
Previous trips have
taken local educators to
Argentina/Chile and South
Africa.
“This is a tremendous
opportunity for AASU facul
ty and Savannah-Chatham
teachers to learn about these
countries’ history, people
and culture, enhance their
knowledge and teaching
skills and bring all that back
to Savannah and have a
direct impact on their stu
dents, ” said James
Anderson, AASU director of
the Office of International
Education.
The group which
includes six full-time AASU
faculty, six Savannah-
Chatham teachers, and three
faculty from other USG
institutions will complete a
broad range of study projects
using information gained
from the seminar and provid
ed by resident scholars and
experts, informal meetings
and visits to historic and
contemporary sites.
Some of the cities they
will visit include Budapest
and Debrecen in Hungary
and Prague and Ceske
Budejovice in the Czech
Republic.
Participants also will
work with Fulbright direc
tors and public affairs offi
cials in the U.S. embassies in
both countries.
The U.S. Department
of Education International
Education Program Service’s
(IEPS) mission is to meet the
national needs for expertise
and competence in foreign
languages and international
studies.
The IEPS administers
14 international education
programs benefiting a vari
ety of audiences through
training, research, start-up or
enhancement projects and
fellowships.
