The legacy of the
Scholar-Athlete is alive
and well as the
Savannah-Chatham
Silver Cheetahs proudly
carry the torch of aca
demic excellence.
On Sunday, June 7, 2009,
the Silver Cheetahs were
honored for achieving
High Honor Roll, Honor
Roll and Excellent
Conduct.
The honorees from

GABEO to hold
County wide Festival
Superintendent’s Student of the Month
The Superintendent’s
Student of the Month is
Deondra’ Eason, an eighth
grader at Hubert Middle
School.
Deondra’ was select
ed for his determination
and hard work.
Deondra’ has made
great strides this school
year. After several unsuc
cessful years at other
schools, Deondra’ came to
Hubert determined to suc
ceed.
This school year,
Deondra’ has made the
honor roll every marking
period, and he has excelled
in and out of the class
room. Deondra’ is a
member of the National
Junior Honor Society and
was recently nominated to
serve on the City of
Savannah’s Youth Council
and to serve as a Youth
Ambassador.
In addition to his sig
nificant progress,
Deondra’ has received sev
eral school awards and
recognitions.

He was recognized
for being the most respect
ful and mannerable stu
dent.
He was also awarded
for having perfect atten
dance, and he recently
received the Citizenship
award.
“Deondra’ is a
model student. He is loved
by his peers and every
adult in the building. He is
always willing to lend a
helping hand to his peer
who might be struggling
academically,” says Dr.
Wanda Dixon, English
Language Arts/Reading
teacher.
When asked what
makes him strive for aca
demic success, Deondra’
says...“I have to do the
right thing because my
younger brothers look up
to me.” He further states,
“I want to make something
of myself and become a
productive citizen.”
An outgoing student
and role model for both his
school and our entire com
munity, SCCPSS is proud
to name Deondra’ Eason
the Superintendent’s
Student of the Month.
The Superintendent’s
Student of the Month pro
gram recognizes individual
students at the monthly
board meetings who have
excelled in the area of aca
demics, leadership, and
community service.
Deondra’ was recog
nized by Dr. Lockamy and
presented with an award
plaque and $100 savings
bond at the regular board
meeting on Wednesday,
June 3, 2009.
The Georgia Association
of Black Elected Officials
(GABEO), in partnership with
the Carver Village/Heights
Mission Organization, and the
Greenbriar Children’s Center
will sponsor a Countywide
Community Festival and
Celebration on Saturday, June
20, at 6pm.
The event will be held at the
Kennedy Park, Carver Village,
905 Collat Street.
Come and meet local, state,
and federal officials, civil rights
activists, educators, law
enforcement, and youth advo
cates.
This event is free and
open to the public.
There will be music, food,
entertainment, and a health and
job fair.
This event is a part of
GABEO’s annual summer con
vention themed “Stopping the
Violence, Saving our Children,
Ending the Carnage!!”.

With more than 700
members statewide, GABEO’s
main focus is on developing
programs which will provide
deterrents to violence and crime
among youth; promoting voter
registration, education and par
ticipation; forming literacy pro
grams to battle the growing
problem of illiteracy in the state;
and securing economic parity
for all Georgians.
