Foundation To
Hold Fest
Alumni of Savannah State
will gather in Atlanta on July
11 for SuperTiger Fest at
Grant Park. The festivities
will last from 1p.m. until 7
p.m. The three-day event, in
addition to promoting healthy
lifestyles, will raise college
scholarships for students
entering SSU. Last year,
alumni from the Class of
1957 to the Class of 2008
were in attendance and over
700 participants are expected
this year. The cookout will
culminate with the awarding
of two monetary scholarships
for incoming freshmen to
Savannah State. The weekend
starts on July 10 with the 2nd
Annual SSU Summer
Homecoming White Party at
Carnegie’s located at 55 Park
Place in Northeast Atlanta.
After the cookout on Saturday
afternoon, the After Party will
take place at 595 North Event
Venue & Lounge in northwest
Atlanta. The events are put on
by the SSU Super Tiger
Foundation which is made up
of former SSU football play
ers Chennis Berry, Michael
Stovall, Benji Turman and
Johnnie Green.
MEAC Pays Visit
To SSU
Officials from the Mid-
Eastern Athletic Conference
made a visit to Savannah
State on June 29 and 30.
Making the visit to the cam
pus were Dennis Thomas
(MEAC commissioner);
Sonja Stills (MEAC assistant
commissioner for administra
tion and compliance/senior
woman administrator);
Dwight Datcher (Howard ath
letics director); Henry Brooks
(Maryland-Eastern Shore fac
ulty athletics representative);
and Adeanah Pooler (South
Carolina State senior woman
administrator/assistant aca
demic enhancement). The
committee arrived in town on
June 29 and ate dinner at the
home of the SSU president.
On June 30, the group met
with SSU administrators, ath
letics staff, student-athletes
and athletic boosters as well
as toured some of SSU’s ath
letic facilities. When asked
about the visit, SSU's presi
dent said " I thought the visit
went real well. The committee
saw a lot of things they appre
ciated and thought would be
beneficial to the conference,
specifically our location and
interest." Dr. Yarbrough
added that the committee had
no major concerns but stated
"with every visit suggestions
were made on some things
that we can improve upon."
Plump Runs At
Junior Nationals
Savannah State sprinter Eric
Plump competed in the
USATF Junior Nationals on
June 27 in Eugene, Oregon.
Plump ran in the men’s 200m
and missed making the finals
by finishing 9th with a time of
21.82. The top eight finishers
advanced to the finals. Joshua
Howard placed 8th with a
time of 21.77.
FVSU’s Boone Out
As SID
Russell Boone who served as
sports information director at
Fort Valley State for 18 years
has been relieved of his
duties. During Boone’s tenure
at FVSU, he arranged all
sports information activities
for all the Wildcat and Lady
Wildcat athletic teams and
served as the primary media
contact for all athletic teams.
The Itta Bena, Mississippi
native received his bachelor
of arts degree in mass com
munications for Lincoln
University of Missouri.
There, Boone served as assis
tant SID for one year before
taking over and serving as
SID for four years. Boone’s
last official day as the
Wildcats SID was May 15

Council, and County
Commissioners who made
that happen.”
I n October 2008, City
Council allocated $350,000
in funds to help the Y make
necessary repairs to its struc
ture.
The City Council fol
lowed suit in December with
$350,000 in SPLOST funds.
The first phase of the
repairs is to replace the badly
leaking roof, heat and air
conditioning, and repair the
windows in the gymnasium.
Additional plans call for
repairing the pool, replacing
the soccer and ball fields,
adding signage, and improv
ing the facility for programs,
including the commercial
kitchen.
“We have already
been able to accomplish a lot
thanks to community sup
port,” says Doliber. “We
have a computer lab, have
refurbished several class
rooms, had some landscap
ing done, and painted all
public areas. We also have a
complete workout facility
that has been donated and is
open to members.”
Tillman and the board
see the restoration of its
charter as the end of one hard
one fight and the beginning
of a new chapter for the West
Broad Street YMCA.
“We are already work
ing with community partners
to add health and wellness
services, education and job
training, resources, and pro
grams for the community.
We are expanding our child
care and will be taking
infants through pre-K as well
as expanding our afterschool
program for middle and high
school students.”

has had four of its programs
accredited for a period of
three years by the interna
tional accrediting body,
CARF International.
The four programs
