Awards $10,000 in Scholarships

Mu Phi Chapter of
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity,
Incorporated hosted their
annual Scholarship Awards
Celebration to commemo
rate the accomplishments of
area 2009 high school grad
uates.
A total of $10,000 in
scholarships were awarded
throughout the evening
which was held at the Hilton
Garden Inn Midtown.
Several recipients were
given awards based on the
Fraternity's four cardinal
principals, Manhood,
Scholarship, Perseverance,
and Uplift.
The awards included a
Basileus Outstanding
Achievers Award,
Community Service, and
Academic Achievement
Awards.
The Brothers of Mu
Phi Chapter hosted a mixer
that preceded the banquet
for the family and friends of
the recipients.
The program included
reflections from former
scholarship recipients along
with remarks from Dr.
Thomas B. Lockamy, Jr.
Savannah-Chatham County
Public School District
Superintendent.
Mrs. Irene C. Hines,
District 5 School Board
member was also in atten
dance.
Proceeds for scholar
ships come from the gener
ous supporters for the chap
ter's annual Omega Mardi
Gras and other fund raising
events.
Mu Phi, the local chap
ter of Omega Psi Phi
Fraternity, Incorporated was
established on April 7, 1926,
and has been serving the
community through various
mandated programs that
include, mentoring at risk
youth, Habitat for
Humanity, and American
Diabetes Awareness.

Chief Charles G.
Middleton of the Savannah
Fire & Emergency Services
Bureau has successfully
completed the process that
awards him the professional
designation of “Chief Fire
Officer” (CFO).
The Commission on
Professional Credentialing
met on July 8, 2009 to offi
cially confer the re-designa-
tion upon Chief Middleton.
Chief Middleton is one of
only 660 CFO’s worldwide.
The Chief Fire Officer
Designation program is a
voluntary program designed
to recognize individuals
who demonstrate their
excellence in seven meas
ured components including:
Experience, Education,
Professional Development,
Professional Contributions,
Association Membership,
Community Involvement,
and Technical
Competencies.
Chief Middleton
received his original desig
nation on August 20, 2003.
To maintain the designation,
individuals need to show
they have continued to

areas: Professional
Development, Professional
Contributions, Active
Association Membership and
Community Involvement.
A Board of Review con
sisting of members of the fire
and emergency services pro
fession, academia, and
municipal agencies reviews
each application and recom
mends successful candidates
for designation to the
Commission.
Chief Middleton has
been a member of the
Savannah Fire & Emergency
Services Bureau for 3 years.

ed from the Center's pro
gram. This

held on Saturday, July
25,2009 in The Eden
Room located at the Temple of Glory 1105
Stiles Avenue.
We are very pleased to have Mr.
Lemuel "Russ" Moore CEO of Coastal
Scooters, LLC, serving as our guest speaker.
Moore, started on the journey of
entrepreneurship In October 2001 based on a
conversation he had. What that person said
changed his life forever. In 2003, Mr.
Moore and his wife, Angie developed the
business plan to become a rental business
whose focus is on urban transportation and
small efficient scooters (gas or electric) vehi
cles. In August 2004, they opened a small
shop with sixteen scooters at 418 West
Broughton Street.
In late 2007, Coastal Scooters moved
to its present location 645 East Broughton
Street and has a second satellite location
behind on the comer of West St. Julian
and Whitaker Streets.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The event will

retired educator and
civil rights activist, has a
compelling behind the
scenes story representative
of the contribution of
women in the civil rights
movement.

Torch: Let's Preserve the
Life and Legacy of W. W.
Law Together."
