Morehouse School of Medicine
Honored by State Medical Association
During its 116th annu
al Convocation in Hilton
Head, S.C. recently, the
Georgia State Medical
Association (GMSA) hon
ored a nationally recog
nized a nationally recog
nized surgeon and two for
mer presidents of
Morehouse School of
Medicine for their exem
plary contributions.
James F. Densler,
M.D., Morehouse School
of Medicine adjunct clini
cal associate professor of
surgery, received the
Distinguished Service
Medallion, which is the
highest award given by the
GMSA.
Densler received
national attention when he
performed a brilliant oper
ation on a 7 month old
infant with the absence of
bile ducts. The Atlanta
Constitution was so
impressed that they called
him a “miracle worker” in
the May 17, 1974 editorial
edition. He served as con
vention co-chair from
1974-1977 when GMSA
did not have an executive
director. He also gave
James F. Densler, M.D.
numerous scientific pre
sentations to the GMSA
quarterly magazine and the
Journal of the National
Medical Association.
Densler is a native of
Savannah, and is an honor
graduate of Beach High
School and Savannah State
College.
Densler is a practic
ing surgeon and resides in
Atlanta.
Also recognized was
Louis W. Sullivan, M.D.,
and David Satcher, M.D.,
Ph. D. Sullivan received
the Distinguished Service
Award in appreciation of
his outstanding service as
Morehouse School of
Medicine’s founding dean
and president, cabinet
member and national med
ical leader. Sullivan served
as U.S. Secretary of Health
and Human Services under
George H.W. Bush. He is
now president emeritus of
the Morehouse School of
Medicine.
Satcher was recog
nized for his outstanding
contributions as a past
president of the Morehouse
School of Medicine, for
mer Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention
Director, 16th surgeon gen
eral and a national medical
leader.
Morehouse School of
Medicine (MSM) recruits
and trains minority and
other students as physi
cians, biomedical scientists
and public health profes
sionals committed to
improving the health and
well-being of communities.

2009-2010 Board of
Directors and Community
Projects. The 2009-2010
Board is as follows: Julie

Katie Joyner, Vice President
of Communications; Kay
Thigpen, Vice President of
Community; Tiffany
Hughes, Vice President of
Finance; Jessica McClellan,
Vice President of
Membership; Jennifer Self,
Treasurer; Mary Jo Halligan,
Nominating Chair; Heather
Rath, Strategic Planning
Chair; Laura Hassell,
Sustaining Board Advisor,
and Kim Chambless,
Parliamentarian.
President Julie Allen has
been a member of Junior
League of Savannah for 8
years, having transferred her
membership from the Junior
League of Greenwich,
Connecticut.
This year begins the
second year of a five-year
commitment to a focus area
of women's and children's
advocacy.
The Junior League of
Savannah believes that
women and children deserve
to be empowered through
quality opportunities in order
to thrive and to be contribut
ing members of our commu
nity.
