Sts. It was standing room
only when Teddy Adams,
Huxsie Scott and Ben
Tucker, members of the
Savannah Coastal Jazz
Association Hall of Fame
took center stage. Adams
called it an impromptu "Jam
Session" that included a
long time soprano saxo
phone player returning to
Savannah from New
Orleans, Sheik Rasheed.
Also appearing was Larry
Douglas, on trumpet. He is
originally from Statesboro
now living in San Francisco.
Mr. Charles Dougherty set
in on Tenor Saxophone. He
now lives in New York and
returns to Savannah month
ly to visit his mother.
The drummer, Sean
Bolden mesmerized the
audience with his skills. He
was drumming up wall. He
was recently discharged
from the Army and is now a
student at Armstrong
Atlantic majoring in Music.
Brendan Polk, a recent
Savannah Arts Academy
graduate with a full scholar
ship to Florida State, sat in
on the keyboards. At Florida
State, he will study with the
dynamic piano player,
Marcus Roberts.
Eric Jones, an
Armstrong Atlantic graduate
tickled the ivories on the
keyboards performing the
many tunes of Mercer.
Huxsie Scott serenaded the
audience with Mercer songs
including "Come Rain or
Come Shine". The late
Pearl Bailey made her debut
singing that very same
Mercer song. Other songs
were "Goody, Goody",
Blues in Night (My Mama
Done Told Me), Days of
Wine and Roses, I'm Old
Fashioned and many others.
The band played Satin
Doll, which is the only col
laboration between Johnny
Mercer and Duke Ellington
that has gained international
notoriety. This was one of
many concerts that are held
monthly for Coastal Jazz
Association members. The
next big event will be the
Savannah Jazz Festival to be
held September 20-27,
2009. The national acts will
be held in Forsyth Park,
