Chatham Academy Earns SAIS-SACS
Accreditation
Chatham Academy, a
school dedicated to meeting
the educational needs of
students with learning dif
ferences, has completed the
process to continue its sta
tus as an accredited member
of the Southern Association
of Independent Schools
(SAIS) and the Southern
Association of Colleges and
Schools (SACS).
To earn accreditation
from SAIS and SACS,
Chatham Academy com
plied with quality standards,
was evaluated by an outside
group of peer professionals,
and implemented a school
plan focused on strategic
improvement and student
performance.
Chatham Academy
completed the self-study
process and peer review
visit which must be repeated
every five years for contin
ued accreditation.
In today's world of
accountability in schooling,
accreditation serves as a
critical component of a
school's demonstrated
effectiveness and ability to
provide successful school
ing for children.
A school that is able to
achieve accreditation

to a process that requires the
school to meet a set of rig
orous, research-based stan

gram of continuous school
improvement; and to

demonstrate quality assur
ance to its stakeholders
through self-evaluation and
peer review. SAIS-SACS
accreditation provides
schools access to an inte
grated network of services
that supports every school's
ability to identify and meet
its goals for improving stu
dent performance and the
teaching and learning
process.
“We are very proud of
our achievement of success
fully maintaining SACS
accreditation after this 5-
year re-evaluation process
and feel that this enhances
our school. We have
thoughtfully examined our
curriculum and teaching
methods to be positive they
match our students' needs,”
says Carolyn Hannaford,
Principal of Chatham
Academy.
Established in 1895,
SACS is a non-govemmen-
tal, voluntary organization
that accredits more than
13,000 public and non-pub
lic institutions from early-
childhood to university.
Founded in 1978,
Chatham Academy is an
independent school with 90
students. Chatham
Academy's philosophy
holds that a student's self-
concept, attitude and past
experiences affect the daily
learning process of that
child.
Teaching academic skills
for grades 1-12, appropriate
daily behavior and social
skills are an important part
of the curriculum. Teachers
use a variety of language-
based and multi-sensory
teaching methods to make
learning accessible to every
