Sports with Walter Moore
SSU Starts
Football Camp
Savannah State began its
2009 football camp on
August 3. Plead coach Robby
Wells addressed the team that
same night and tabbed this
season's theme as "All Out
All In". Wells stated the
meaning behind the theme
was "I want an all out effort
from everyone and everyone
has to be all in when it comes
to what we're doing. We have
to be together." 85 players
reported to camp with the
wide receiver Antonio
Proctor (5'4") and defensive
back Brent McCall (149-lbs.)
being the smallest while
offensive linemen Jonathan
Clowers (6'6") and Jared
Brunson (332-lbs.) being the
largest.
Lady Tigers Add
Two Coaches
Cedric Baker, head women's
basketball coach at Savannah
State has added two more
coaches to his staff. Joining
Walter Moore
the SSU family are Sonya
Wilson and Billy Hamilton.
Wilson, a South Carolina
State grad, was a volunteer
assistant at Orangeburg-
Wilkerson High School last
season while Hamilton, a
Albany State alumnus, was a
volunteer assistant at
Tallahassee Community
College a year ago.
SSU Volleyball
Start Workouts
The Savannah State volley
ball team welcomed back 10
lettermen from last year and
hope to improve on last sea
son's 10-win season, a school
record. SSU lost six players
but head coach Malik Jones
has added five freshmen to
the roster. Brittany Lewis and
Whitney Bullock will be the
2009 team leaders. SSU starts
the season on August 29 by
hosting Edward Waters (12
noon) and Columbia (4 pm)
at the Willcox-Wiley Gym.
Rams Eye Another
Playoff Run
Albany State will rely on
their defense as they try to
make the Division II playoffs
for the seventh straight year.
ASU finished 7-4 a year ago
and was second in the SIAC.
The Rams defense returns
eight starters to a team that
led the conference in fewest
points and yards allowed.
The offense lost coordinator
Donald Pittman to Fort
Valley State in the off-season
but do return quarterback
Kisan Flakes who threw for
1,198 yards and 13 touch
downs. The ASU ground
game led the league in rush
ing. The Rams begin the sea
son August 27 on the road at
Chowan.

Student of the Year

ticipants also attended a field
trip to Hunter Air Field on
Friday, May 22, 2009. The
boys had an opportunity to
experiment with some of the
tools Marines utilize while in
the field. They were able to
try on military gear, test
physical strength, and eat
M.R.E's (Meals, Ready to
Eat).
According to Scott
Alternative School
Graduation Coach, Elnora
Herbert, “The influence of
the Marine volunteers
through the Learning for Life
program had a profound
impact on Aric’s overall
demeanor and self-confi
dence. Aric began the pro
gram reserved, quiet and
unmotivated. Weeks later,
after participating in the field
trip to Paris Island , Aric
began to exhibit skills as a
leader and motivator with
ambition. He completely
changed, coming out of his
‘shell’ and exhibiting a posi
tive, focused attitude." Aric
concurred that the program
has influenced him to start
thinking more seriously
about his future, “Through
the program I have gained an
interest in the Marine Corp.
as a career,” said Aric. A
bright and successful future
is predicted for Aric Bowker
by all who worked with him
this school year.
