The National Week of
Action is aimed at educating
our communities and deci
sion makers about the impor
tance of comprehensive sex
education in our school sys
tems.
The groups were raising
awareness about the
Responsible Education About
Life Act (the REAL Act), the
federal bill that promotes the
use of comprehensive sex
education programs, will be a
core message.
This bill will provide
funding to states for medical

1. Georgia has the 8th highest
teen birth rate in the nation.
2. Over 22,500 teen pregnan
cies occur each year in our
state. That's 62 new teen
pregnancies each day -or over
2 teen pregnancies an hour.
3. According to the State
Division of Public Health, the
teen pregnancy rate in
Georgia is over 67 pregnan
cies per 1,000 girls ages 15 to
19.
4. While the teen birth rate
has declined by 30% in
Georgia over the past decade,
there was a 3 percent increase
in Georgia's teen birth rate in
2006...And the facts go on
and on.

ing funds for the more than
$9,000.00 it awards in schol
arships every year.
This year, in addition to
its usual fundraising activi
ties, the chapter has taken a
giant step in bringing the
nationally-known, award
winning, multifaceted jour
nalist and CNN Political
Analyst Roland S. Martin to
Savannah for a scholarship
luncheon at the Savannah
Marriott Riverfront.
The event, “Political
Minds in Action,” which will
feature Martin as the keynote
speaker, will be held at the
Savannah Marriott
Riverfront Ballroom
Saturday, October 10, 2009
at 12 Noon.
Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority, Inc. is a private,
non-profit organization
whose purpose is to provide
assistance and support
through established pro
grams in local communities
throughout the world. Delta
Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
was founded in 1913 by 22
students at Howard
University.
Roland Martin has won
more than 20 professional
awards for journalistic excel
lence, including a regional
Edward R. Murrow Award
from the Radio Television
News Directors; several First
Place awards from the
Dallas-Fort Worth
Association of Black
Communicators; two cita
tions from the National
Associated Press-Managing
Editors Conference; the top
sports reporting award in
1997 from the National
Association of Black
Journalists; and honors from
the Houston Press Club.
He is a 1987 graduate
of Jack Yates High School-
Magnet School of
Communications, and a 1991
graduate of Texas A&M
University, where he earned
a Bachelor of Science
Degree in journalism.
In May 2008, Martin
received a Master's Degree
in Christian
Communications from
Louisiana Baptist University.
Roland Martin is a commen
tator for TV One Cable
Network. He is also a CNN
Analyst, appearing on a vari
ety of shows.
Martin is a member of
the National Association of
Black Journalists, and a life
member of Alpha Phi Alpha
Fraternity, Inc.
Beta Phi Lambda

Fraternity, Inc., will join the
Deltas in this venture by
