Tarver Nominated to Serve as United
States Attorney
P resident Barack
Obama has nominated
Edward Tarver to
serve as United States
Attorney for the Southern
District of Georgia. If con
firmed by the Senate, Tarver
would be the first African
American to serve as chief
federal prosecutor in the
Southern District.
At the time of the
Tarver nomination, the
President also announced
nominees for US Attorney
posts in other areas, includ
ing Michael Moore for the
Middle District of Georgia,
and Carmen Ortiz for
Massachusetts. Ortiz would
be the first Hispanic and first
female US Attorney in
Massachusetts.
"I have nominated
these three outstanding men
and women to serve as US
Attorneys in their states,"
President Obama said. "I
nominated them for their
diligence, intellect, integrity

Tarver is sharehold
er in the Augusta law firm of
Hull, Towill, Norman,
Barrett and Salley, and has
been a Georgia State Senator
since September 2005. He
received his B.A. degree
from Augusta State
University in 1981 and his
J.D. from the University of
Georgia School of Law in
1991. Between college and
law school, he served in the
United States Army, achiev
ing the rank of Captain.
After graduating from law
school, he clerked for Judge
Dudley Bowen, Jr. on the
U.S. District Court for the
Southern District of
Georgia.
Tarver resides in
Augusta with his wife
Beverly. They are the par
ents of two children,
Edward, Jr. and Beverly
Elizabeth.

YMCA Holds Annual Heart of
Savannah 5K Road Race
Participants of the 1/4 Mile Kiddie Fun Run along with Johnny Bryant.
The YMCA of Coastal
Georgia held the 20th
Anniversary Heart of
Savannah 5K Road Race &
1/4 Mile Kiddie Fun Run.
All proceeds from the event
benefited the Priceless Gifts
Annual Fund. This fund
helps the YMCA of Coastal
Georgia to provide financial
assistance to those who oth
erwise would not be able to
afford program or member
ship fees.
The race started at
the comer of Congress and
Jefferson, proceeded south
on Jefferson, east on York,
then turned south on Bull.
The race continued on Bull
winding around Savannah's
historic squares then once
around Forsyth Park, headed
north up Bull, west on
Bryan, then returned to City
Market and finally finishing
at the comer of Congress and
Barnard. Among the partici
pants of the race was Johnny
Bryant. Bryant suffered an
injury approximately five
years ago and was unable to
walk. He began therapy at
the YMCA and has since
started to walk again, and
walked the 1/4 mile race!
The YMCA of Coastal
Georgia's Heart of Savannah
5K celebrated youth activity
by inviting children to ran or
walk. The 1/4 mile event
was held prior to the 5K and
was a fun-filled, non-com
petitive event. Each child
received a winner's ribbon
and a short sleeved t-shirt.

During a year when
construction companies are
suffering due to an interna
tional economic recession,
one business that is defying
the trend is I. L. Fleming,
Inc., a successful African-
American-owned construc
tion contractor headquartered
in Midway, Ga.
On June 16, 2009,1. L.
Fleming, Inc., was awarded a
$17,200,000 contract to
design and build a dining and
reception facility for the U.
S. Army in Fort Benning,
Georgia. The estimated com
pletion date for this project is
December 23, 2010.
I. L. Fleming, Inc. con
tinued its trend by success
fully competing for a
$16,260,000 contract to
design and construct the
Brigade Headquarters
Facility at Fort Stewart,
Georgia. This contract was
awarded on Aug. 27, 2009.
The work has an estimated
completion date of February
28, 2011.
To commemorate the
success for his firm in com
peting for these two contracts
and several others during
2009, I. L. Fleming,
President of I. L. Fleming,
Inc., presented a beautiful
