President Barack Obama to Receive
2009 Nobel Peace Prize
The Norwegian Nobel
Committee has decided that
the Nobel Peace Prize for
2009 is to be awarded to
President Barack Obama "for
his extraordinary efforts to
strengthen international
diplomacy and cooperation
between peoples." The
Committee attached special
importance to Obama's
vision of and work for a
world without nuclear
weapons and to his work in
meeting the challenge of
global warming.
"Obama has as
President created a new cli
mate in international poli
tics," the Nobel Prize
Committee said in its
announcement of the Peace
Prize award. "Multilateral
diplomacy has regained a
central position, with empha
sis on the role that the United
Nations and other interna
tional institutions can play."
“I am both surprised
and deeply humbled by the decision of
President Barack Obama
the Nobel Committee. Let me be clear:
I do not view it as a recognition of my
own accomplishments, but
rather as an affirmation of
American leadership on
behalf of aspirations held by
people in all nations.
I do not feel that I deserve to
be in the company of so
many transformative figures
that have been honored by
this prize," he said. "I will
accept this award as a call to
action, a call for all nations to
confront the challenges of the
21st century.”, Obama said.
The Nobel Peace Prize
comes with a monetary
award of approximately
$ 1.42 million.
The Prize is present
ed annually in Oslo, in the
presence of the king, on
December 10, the anniver
sary of the death of Swedish
industrialist and dynamite
inventor Alfred Nobel, who
established the Nobel Prize
system. Nobel died in 1896
and did not leave an explana
tion for choosing peace as a
prize category.
State-of-the-Art Playground Built by
Volunteers at May Street YMCA
Over 200 volunteers turned out to make this one day building project a success
The exciting event to
build a state-of-the-art 3,000-
square foot playground in
just one day kicked off with
a rally on Tuesday, Oct. 13,
at the historic West Broad
YMCA, 1110 May St. The
playground is funded
through a $61,000 grant from
The Home Depot
Foundation, and a $7,500
contribution from the City of
Savannah.
The event is organized by the
nonprofit organization
KaBOOM!, which envisions
a great place to play within
walking distance of every
child in America. It's a goal
also shared by the Healthy
Savannah 2012 initiative,
organized by Mayor Otis
Johnson.
Founded in 1947, the
West Broad Street YMCA
was formed to serve Blacks
in then legally segregated
Savannah. While this is no
longer its purpose, the West
Broad Street YMCA is locat
ed between two Housing
Authority Neighborhoods,
and it continues to serve by
building strong kids, strong
families, and a strong com
munity. This playground,
which will be open to the
public, provides enrichment
