Mister Mercer is a
lighthearted musical play
about the late Johnny
Mercer.
Johnny, and his wife
Ginger, stuck this side of
Heaven in the apartment
of Darlene, a zany well-
known local singer and
ardent Mercer fan, review
their lives and prepare to
meet with God.
The play, Written by
Ja Jahannes, is directed by
Jaime Spore White, Ted
Seaman serves as music
director.
The music in the play
includes all time Mercer
favorites.

SSU Starts
Basketball Season
Savannah State will tip off
their 2009-10 basketball sea
son with a rare double-header
at Tiger Arena on November
13. The women will play
Edward Waters at 6 p.m. fol
lowed by the men who play
Webber International at 8
p.m. The Lady Tigers return
two starters off last season's
9-22 squad and added seven
new players including 6-7
freshman Reynetta Phillips.
The Tigers , who were 15-14
last year, also return two
starters and will be lead by 6-
7 sophomore Rashad Hassan
and 6-4 senior swingman
Jovonni Shuler.
Albany State
Makes Playoffs

Fort Valley State 35-13 in the
20th Fountain City Classic in
Columbus, GA, Albany State
(8-2) has made the Division
II playoffs and will enter as a
third seed. The Rams will be
making their sixth straight

Miles Placed On
Probation
The NCAA has placed Miles
College on probation for four
years for rules violations in
10 sports dating to 2004.The
Birmingham based school let
124 ineligible athletes partic
ipate in sports or receive aid.
The NCAA said Miles lacked
institutional control and did
n't have a viable rules compli
ance program. It accused for
mer athletic director
Augustus James of fabricat
ing the results of two
women's track meets to com
ply with minimum competi
tion requirements. The school
is vacating wins in 10 sports
going back to the 2004-2005
season. Those sports include
football, baseball, softball,
volleyball, men's and
women's basketball and

So far, they have been
given the opportunity to par
ticipate in practical simula
tions, where each student
identified a financial goal
and the best way to meet that
goal.
The ladies assisted the
young men while encourag
ing them to apply knowledge
learned about needs versus
wants and the differences
between long- and short-term
goals.
The action plans will be
used in further activities that
teach ways to support a sav
ings account. The program
teaches the importance of
saving, goal setting for sav
ings, choosing appropriate
savings options, and identi
fying which options can
assist in goal achievement.
The Risers Academy
for Young Men is a pilot pro
gram in the Savannah
Chatham-County Public
School System that opened
at Hubert Middle School in
the fall of 2008.The program
gives the surrounding com
munity an opportunity to par
ticipate in the learning
process and allows students
the chance to engage outside
the classroom.
The program empha
sizes core principles of aca
demic excellence, leadership,
and service. It works to
develop character and mental
strength so the young men
can maximize on their poten
tial.
