FEMA Administrator
to speak at SSU
Former Harlem Globetrotter Takes a
Stand Against Youth Violence

Fugate will join campus
and community officials to
talk about preparedness
issues, both on college cam
puses and in coastal Georgia.
The Homeland Security and
Emergency Management
Student Organization
(HSEMSO), a student chap
ter of the International
Association of Emergency
Managers (IAEM), is organ
izing the program on person
al preparedness, which is
free and open to the public.
Fugate was nominated
by President Barack Obama
in March and confirmed by
the Senate in May 2009 to
lead FEMA, which is part of
the U.S. Department of
Homeland Security (DHS).
As administrator of
FEMA, Fugate oversees fed
eral emergency prepared
ness, response and recovery
policies and activities.
Launched at Savannah
State in 2007, the Homeland
Security and Emergency
Management (HSEM) pro
gram was the first bachelor’s
degree of its kind in Georgia
and the first in the nation at a
historically black college or
university. The degree pro
gram prepares students for
public and private sector
positions in the growing
field of emergency manage
ment and homeland security
to improve disaster out
comes.
In 2008, DHS awarded
the university a $300,000
scientific leadership grant to
explore and improve emer
gency policy and planning
for underserved and socially
vulnerable populations,
including those in Chatham
County, over a three-year
period.

conference organized by Tools
for Change Savannah, a project
coordinated by The Harambee
House, Inc./Citizens for
Environmental Justice (CFEJ)
and funded by the W.K.
Kellogg Foundation to engage
ordinary citizens in community-
based participatory research.
The press conference held
Friday, November 6th was part
of the 2nd Annual Fall Lead
Awareness Carnival that took
place at 618 W. Anderson
Street.
Coach Rivers also announced
the launch of a basketball pro
gram - in partnership with The
Harambee House, Inc./Citizens
for Environmental Justice
(CFEJ) and the West Broad
Street YMCA - as a means of
enhancing protective factors that
help prevent Youth violence in
Savannah.
"Collecting data on the
correlation between environ
mental pollutants and violence
will help communities under
stand the detrimental effects of
lead poisoning and other types
of environmental health hazards
on youth. The creation of vio
lence prevention programs like
that of Coach Rivers is a logical
next step in our helping youth
and the community take respon
sibility for changing policies
and programs that address these
crucial issues," said Anees
Fardan, a staff member at The
Harambee House, Inc. ./Citizens
for Environmental Justice
(CFEJ) and Project Coordinator
of Tools for Change Savannah.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Presents
A Taste of Soul
On Saturday,
November 21, 2009, Gamma
Sigma Omega Chapter of
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
Inc. will sponsor “Taste of
Soul” Exposition at the West
Broad Street YMCA from
12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m.
This pre-holiday treat
will allow the community to
experience some of the culi
nary delights of some of the
community's female entre
preneurs who are restaurant
owners and caterers in the
Savannah community.
The women will pre
pare a variety of tasty dishes
to be sampled by those
attending the event.
As women become
more and more a part of the
business landscape and their
enterprise grows, they
become faced with many
challenges, including busi
ness expansion.
As such, Gamma
Sigma Omega Chapter will
assist these women in build
ing a strong foundation and
enhance their presence in the
community by showcasing
them in “A Taste of Soul”.
The event is free and
opened to the public. For

Alpha Kappa Alpha is
the oldest sorority in the
country, established for
African American women. It
was founded on the campus
of Howard University in
Washington, D.C. in 1908.
The mission of the organiza
tion is “service to all
mankind”. The organization
continues to provide service
through it hundreds of com
munity chapters, both
domestic and international.
The local chapter,
Gamma Sigma Omega has
supported non-profit organi
zations in the Savannah com
munity for sixty-six years
and is extremely proud of its
legacy agency, Greenbriar
Children's Center, which was
founded by the members of
Gamma Sigma Omega.
