Sigma Tau Chapter members with guests at Breast Cancer Tea
The Sigma Tau Chapter
of Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority, Incorporated at
Armstrong Atlantic State
University, supported Breast
Cancer Awareness Month
with a Breast Cancer Tea
held at the Compass Point
Clubhouse on October 26,
2009.
October is Breast
Cancer Awareness Month
and the members decided on
a Tea for the sororities on
campus.
The program started
with a warm welcome by its
dynamic President, Christian
Goodman followed by the
occasion by its program
chairman, Whittney
Richardson.
Facts and statistics of
breast cancer were given to
educate those that were in
attendance.
The highlights of the
Tea were two dynamic
speakers for the hour, Ms.
Sheri Moyer and Mrs.
Martina Correia. Ms. Moyer
represents Young Survival
Coalition (YSC), an organi
zation of Young Women
United Against Breast
Cancer. She presented statis
tics and facts about Breast
Cancer. Mrs. Correia, a
Breast Cancer Warrior, gave
her testimony about fighting
breast cancer for the last 10
years. She represents the
National Black Leadership
Initiative on Cancer
(NBLIC). Breast
Cancer is the second most
common cancer in women,
after skin cancer. More than
250,000 women in the U.S.
will develop breast cancer
this year, and more than
41,000 will die from it.
Although the disease is most
common in women 40 and
over, it can occur in younger
women. That's why it's
important that all breast
lumps be checked by a doc
tor. More information can be
found at
www.komen.org/riskmatrix
and www.cancer.org
In attendance at the Tea
with Sigma Tau members
were members of Tri-Sigma
Sorority, Alpha Sigma Tau
Sorority, Mrs. Sally Watkins
(Associate Director of
Student Activities), Dr.
Clemontine Washington
(President Gamma Sigma
Omega), Mrs. Audrey B.
Singleton (Advisor for
Sigma Tau Chapter) and Mrs.
Sharon Stallings (Assistant
Advisor for Sigma Tau
Chapter).
