Johnson Receives
YMCA Dedicates Playground in Honor
of Ben Lewis

On Friday, November
20, 2009 at 1:30 pm, the West
Broad Street YMCA held a
ceremony dedicating its new
playground to the legacy of
Mr. Benjamin F. Lewis.
Mr. Lewis graduated
from Savannah State College
and received his J.D. from
John Marshall Law College.
In 1945 he became a regular
worker with the US Postal
Service.
In 1963 he was appoint
ed Equal Opportunity Officer
for the Savannah Post Office
and 1969 he was appointed as
the regional EEO from
Atlanta. In 1970 he was
appointed the National Equal
Opportunity Employment
Specialist assigned to
Washington, D.C.
Upon retirement, Mr.
Lewis returned to Savannah
and on September 1, 1971 he
assumed responsibility as the
Executive Director of the
West Broad Street YMCA.
Mr. Lewis was instru
mental in developing pro
grams for local residents to
help them access assistance in
achieving self sufficiency.
Of supreme importance
to Mr. Lewis were the chil
dren.
He had the foresight and
courage to challenge the pro
grams of his day and to work
collaboratively to ensure that
the needs of children were
met.
Sis. Julia E. Johnson,
native Savannahian attended
the Georgia Missionary
Baptist Convention (GMBC)
in Rome, Georgia the week of
November 9th - 12th. Sis.
Johnson was invited to attend
The National Ushers/Nurses
Summit in St. Louis, Missouri
November 13th - 15th.
To Sis. Johnsons sur
prise, she was presented ‘‘The
Cross and Crown Award” for
her dedicated service as an
usher/nurse with in the
Convention by Mrs. Sallie
Titus, National Usher/Nurse
Director with the approval of
the National President Dr.
William J. Shaw. This is her
30th year in attendance.
Sis. Johnson is the moth
er of four children, Wanda G.
Hopkins, John H. Johnson. II,
Dwayne A. Johnson
(Deceased) and Kevin C.
Johnson. She is a member of
Tremont Temple Missionary
Baptist Church, Rev. Ricky A.
Bready, Pastor where she
serves as Co-Director of the
Ushers Ministry, bible teacher
for the Usher and Bus
Ministry, Health Care
Ministry and History
Committee. Community wise
she serves as a lay navigator at
the Nancy N and J.C. Lewis
Cancer and Research Pavilion
a volunteer program to help
reduce healthcare disparities.
Sis. Johnson is a retired nurse
after serving 35 years at St.
Joseph/Candler Hospital.
Sis. Johnson's favorite
bible verse is “I can do all
things through Christ who
strengthens me” Philippians
4:13.

to the current residents
before they are relocated in
January 2010 and to remem
ber the past members.
This service will take
place on Sunday, December
13, 2009 at 5:00 p.m. at the
Savannah Baptist Center
(704 Wheaton Street - next
to Family Dollar) where

Grant Funding

Affiliate of Susan G. Komen
for the Cure is proud to
announce the availability of
$225,000 in grant funds for
fiscal year 2010.Breast can
cer and breast health pro
grams of nonprofit organiza
tions, governmental agen
cies, and educational institu
tions in Bryan, Camden,
Chatham, Effingham, Glynn,
Liberty, Long, and McIntosh
counties are eligible to apply
for grant funds from the
Affiliate.
The promise of Susan
G. Komen for the Cure is to
save lives and end breast
cancer forever by empower
ing people, ensuring quality
care for all and energizing
science to find the cures. The
organization runs one of the
most innovative, responsive
grant programs in breast can
cer today.
In addition to funding
research, the Coastal Georgia
Affiliate funds non-duplica-
tive, community-based
breast health education and
breast cancer screening and
treatment projects for the
medically underserved in
Bryan, Camden, Chatham,
Effingham, Glynn, Liberty,
Long, and McIntosh coun
ties. In 2009, the Affiliate
granted $150,000 to local
community programs. Since
its inception in 2007, the
Affiliate has dispersed grant
funds totaling $233,079.
Grant applications must
be postmarked by December
18, 2009. Announcements of
funding will be made in
March, 2010, and funding
disbursements will begin in
April, 2010, following the
receipt of signed contracts by
March 31.
