SOCIAL AND COMMUNITY NEWS
Enjoy the Holidays
This year, consider
making the celebration more
about family, friends, catch
ing up, talking, laughing, and
enjoying life.Enjoying fami
ly traditions, or starting new
ones.
Concentrate on fun
activities, visiting those
you’ve not had much time
with lately, learning a new
dance or craft, or playing
games. Catch up on reading
and on your rest, but, this
time make it less about the
food.
You know what’s
good for you and what you
should avoid. Tell yourself
you will honor yourself by
doing what you know is
right.
Be active, get some
walking in, especially after
meals ( take a walk around
the block), drink lots of
water, sleep late, and make
some phone calls - sitting
down, or even lying down.
Take some time for
yourself, read the newspaper
or a book, listen to some
music, and enjoy the season,
and the reason for the season.
Start by making a list of all
the things to be thankful for.
I’ve started a list in a book,
and just add to it each day.
If you are going out
to eat, do not go to the dinner
hungry, eat something light,
maybe a small salad, or fruit
Carolyn Guilford
first, and have something
nice to drink. Have you tried
a naturally sparkling water?
You know sodas are
bad for you, but this can be a
real treat for soda lovers.
Mix it with a fruit or veggie
juice, or just pour into a
beautiful glass.
But, we know that the
thanksgiving meal is a big
deal, with lots and lots of
food, so remember to:eat the
healthier foods, first - fruits
and veggies;limit the high fat
foods- anything with butter,
cheese, meat and grease; put
smaller amounts on your
plate - you can get more if
you need to;choose the
turkey breast - remove the
skin;eat slowly - so you can
know when you’re getting
full;don’t think you have to
eat everything offered -
choose only your
favorites;while others are
still eating, you can remain at
the table, enjoying the con
versation and fun while
enjoying a light desert and
water or green tea or, have
desert later and suggest you
all go for a walk outside.
Having desert after a little
exercise is the best way to
go. ( Work for it.)
Clear out a path, roll up
the rug and do the “soul
train” dance or the electric
slide, and really make this
evening memorable. It’s all
about family, friends, enjoy
ing life, relationships, and
being Thankful. And don’t
forget the camera. Smile.
Blessings to you all, and
have a safe, healthy and
happy holiday season.

On Wednesday,
November 4, 2009 three
Mass Communications
Explorer Post students took
the initiative on a day off
from school to get up early
and participate in a live
broadcast with Morning
Show Host, Bill Edwards on
WTKS-AM, a ClearChannel
Radio station.
The purpose of this live
appearance was to promote
the Explorer Post Program
and encourage area business
leaders to consider starting
new Explorer Posts in the
future. Jeremy Joshua,
Chelsey Williams and
Darnisha Green, all students
at H.V. Jenkins High School,
joined the Explorer Post pro
gram because they are inter
ested in career in
Broadcasting, Journalism
and Multimedia.
Following the show,
Bill Edwards gave the stu
dents a tour of the radio sta
tion, including a look at the
original equipment dating
back to when the station first
went on the air.
He also explained the
difference between AM and
FM frequencies and dis
cussed various career oppor
tunities within the field of
broadcasting.
Said Chelsea Williams
of the tour, "I actually hated
the things I had to learn in
physics class, even though
class itself was fun. I always
questioned when I would
ever use any of ‘this stuff’ in
real life, because I was not
aiming to be an engineer or
anything in that field.
However once we took the
trip to ClearChannel & and
Bill Edwards was explaining
the technical terms behind
radio, I wished I would have
paid more attention in that
physics class."
