On November 18, 2009 -
the date that would have been
Johnny Mercer’s 100th birthday
— his statue was dedicated in
Ellis Square.
Community leaders, resi
dents, and relatives were on
hand for the statue unveiling.
Mercer, perhaps most famous as
the man who wrote the words of
the southern lullaby, Moon River
was honored with a posthumous
100th birthday celebration in his
hometown of Savannah.
The year long celebration
culminated with the unveiling of
Johnny's life-size bronze statue
which was designed by sculptor
Susie Chisholm.
The stable was a concept
from a photo Mercer leaning
against a fire hydrant.
Remarks were also
given by Ken Barnes, a friend of
Mercer's who lives in
England.The two met when
Barnes interviewed Mercer. The
two became fast friends.
A new Johnny Mercer/
Richard Sherman song debuted.
Michael Feinstein pre-recorded
the song, "You're in Savannah,"
with music composed by
Academy Award® winner
Richard Sherman . Important
connections to make this song
possible came from executives
at the top of entertainment and
music -- Disney's Howard Green
and London producer Ken
Barnes ."(Mercer's) lyrics had
great imagery and they did
transport you to other places,"
Bames said.
