Sr. presented the Richard R.
Wright Award of Excellence
and the Wiley G. Cyrus
Distinguished Alumni Award
to Luther Conyers Jr. and
Gwendolyn Thompson
Conyers, respectively, during
the 119th Founders Day
observance held on Nov. 23,
2009.
The Conyers, who
reside in Bainbridge, Ga., are
both 1948 graduates of
Savannah State, known then
as Georgia State Industrial
College. Luther received a
bachelor’s degree in agricul
ture and later earned a mas
ter’s degree at Florida A&M
University in Tallahassee,
Fla. Gwendolyn earned her
undergraduate degree, with
honors, in business adminis
tration and later earned a
master’s degree in business
education from Indiana
University, Bloomington, and
the education specialist
degree from the University of
Georgia.
Luther began his career
in education as a teacher of
institutional farm training in
Decatur County. Following
his honorable discharge from
the military after two years of
active duty - during which he
received three Bronze Stars
and a Korean Service Medal
- Luther resumed his teach
ing career at Randolph
County Training School in
Cuthbert, Ga., and later
worked at West Bainbridge
Elementary School, Hutto
High School; Hutto Jr. High
School and Bainbridge High

Raleigh DeWitt
Bynes died Sunday,
November 29, 2009 after a
17 year illness with
Multiple Myeloma.
Born in Brooklyn,
NY to Frenchye and Frank
Bynes, Sr., Raleigh was
educated in the Chatham
County Public Schools
graduating from Alfred E.
Beach High School in
1971. He matriculated at
Savannah State College
(University) and graduated
with honors in 1975 with a
degree in Mortuary
Science from Gupton-
Jones College of Funeral
Service in Atlanta,
Georgia. Bynes was certi
fied at both the state and
national levels. He was the
General Manager of
Bynes-Royall Funeral
Home, Inc, the oldest
Black-owned mortuary in
the United States.
Bynes had many pro
fessional affiliations
including membership in
the Georgia Funeral
Service Practitioners
Association, Inc., the
National Funeral Directors
and Morticians
Association, Inc. and the
Epsilon Nu Delta
Morticians Fraternity.
Bynes was also socially
active, prior to his illness. His
smile warmed every room he
walked into. His social affili
ations included Mt. Moriah
Lodge #15, Prince Hall
Masons; Ezra consistory #27,
32nd Degree Mason;
President of the Wolves
Social Club; The Waldorf
Social Club; the Mutual
Benevolent Society and the
Aristocrats. In addition,
Bynes was a former Board
member of the Greenbriar
Children's Center.
Bynes was a lifetime
member of St. John Baptist
Church "The Mighty
Fortress". He served as for
mer President of the Senior
Usher Board and continued to
serve as an usher until his ill
ness prevailed.
Among Bynes hobbies
was cooking and he was very
good at it. He was a first
place winner of the 100
Celebrity Men Who Cook
2008 and also first place win
ner of the Flying Pigs Pooler
Cook-off in 2008. He also

United Way’s Turkey Trot Adds
$40,000 to Campaign
Participants of the United Way’s Turkey Trot
The United Way’s First
Turkey Trot was held
Thanksgiving morning at
Daffin Park.
Over 600 runners reg
istered to compete in this
fundraiser including over
100 children in the Kids
Run. The event generat
ed over $40,000. This
included Dale Critz, Jr.'s
contribution of $50 for each
of the runners 26 runners
who beat the Turkey in the
race.
