Managing Diabetes, Day by Day
For persons with dia
betes, creating good habits
is critical. Having a rou
tine which supports health
will keep the person with
diabetes on track.
Keeping scheduled
mealtimes, having the right
foods and snacks readily
available at home and
away, and water and juice
on hand. Setting regular
exercise and sleep times
and following that schedule
is important.
Creating a meal time
schedule and keeping to it
is one of first considera
tions for a person with dia
betes. Plan on eating 4 to 5
small meals and snacks
each day. The diet should
allow you to eat great nutri
ent dense foods, not feel
hungry, loose weight (if
you need to), and feel ener
getic. Of course, having
great foods at home starts
with making great choices
at the grocery store.
Choose lots of fresh fruits
and veggies, whole grains
and fruit and nut bars and
unsweetened, unsalted nuts
for snacks, and for taking
in the car, while minimiz
ing processed and refined
foods and sweets.
Eating at regularly
scheduled times helps to
control blood sugar.
Instead of eating when you
feel like it, or eating when
you get around to it, a reg
ular meal and snack sched
ule helps to keep the blood
sugar steady throughout the
day. Portion control is
important too, you don't
Carolyn Guilford
want to eat large meals to
raise your blood sugar too
quickly, ( and don’t eat
large meals at bedtime).
Drink water frequently, and
have water to go, so you
don’t become dehydrated.
Water is the best way
to quench your thirst, and it
helps to break down sugars
in the tissues, and works to
keep the body functioning
normally.
I like to see persons
eat more fruit, and drink
less juice. Juice is conven
ient for us, but the fruit has
more nutrients, and that is
more important for the per
son with diabetes.
Exercise most days of
the week for 45 to 60 min
utes. Exercise is one of the
most important ways to
manage diabetes.
If you are just beginning, it
may be hard getting start
ed, but the benefits are
great. Getting fit is only
one aspect, exercise can
help control blood sugar
levels, blood pressure, cho
lesterol, and ward off com
plications of poor circula
tion.
People who exercise
regularly report feeling
happier, more confident,
more relaxed and that they
sleep better. Walking,
dancing, skating, lifting
weights, whatever. Choose
something you like, create
a routine that you enjoy,
and stick with it. Don’t
depend on someone else,
do it for you.
Losing weight can be
effortless and easy, by eat
ing a healthy diet, engaging
in regular exercise, getting
a good night’s rest, and
drinking the appropriate
amount of water. By creat
ing a healthy lifestyle, you
may find that you no longer
need to take meds for blood
pressure, diabetes, or cho
lesterol. Actually,
most persons will be able
to control diabetes without
meds, once they learn how.
It’s just a matter of getting
the right formula.
