Junior League Accepting Community
Program Development Applications
The Junior League of
Savannah is now accepting
applications for 2010-2011
Community Program
Development Applications
for the Golden Isles and
South Carolina Lowcountry.
The deadline to submit appli
cations is February 1, 2010.
Funding and volunteers will
be provided for projects with
in the designated focus area
of women and children’s
advocacy.
Currently, the Junior
League of Savannah focuses
its efforts on women and chil
dren’s advocacy initiatives.
The Junior League of
Savannah believes that
women and children deserve
to be empowered through
quality opportunities in order
to thrive and to be contribut
ing members of our commu
nity. These opportunities
should develop the whole
person socially, emotionally,
physically, as well as academ
ically.
Eligibility requirements
for Junior League of
Savannah Community
Projects include: being a
501c(3) non-profit organiza
tion; having a commitment to
voluntarism; having a board
of directors; and having an
audited financial statement or
budget. All funds requested
must be used within the geo
graphic boundaries of the
respective areas of
Brunswick/Golden Isles and
South Carolina Lowcountry;
and exclude fund-raising
activities, capital campaigns,
individual requests, travel
expenses, political activities,
religious purposes, salaries
and stipends.

Former SSU AD
Passes
Former Savannah State pro
fessor and athletics director
Dr. Kenneth F. Taylor passed
away on December 8. Taylor
spent 25 years at SSU. The
Tuscaloosa, Alabama native
served two terms as interim
AD at Savannah State, 1985-
86 and 1994-95. Taylor
joined the SSU family in
1971 and became and became
head of the health, physical
education and recreation
department in 1974. Taylor
held two undergraduate
degrees from Stillman and
two graduate degrees from
Alabama. Taylor, who retired
from SSU in 1997, was living
in Fayetteville, GA at the
time of his passing.

12 and 14 former Tiger stu
dent athletes received their
degrees. Receiving degrees

Valentina Howard (women's
track), Roland Jackson (foot
ball), Erica Marchand (cheer

James (women's basketball)
and Antoine Toombs (foot
ball). Milan Johnson earned a
graduate degree while Baxter,
Marchand and Osborne grad

Lady Tigers Beat
Alabama State
Savannah State held Alabama
State without a field goal for
nearly 12 minutes in the sec
ond half as the Lady Tigers
defeated ASU 45-36 in Tiger
Arena on December 13.
During that 12 minute span
SSU went on a 12-3 run to
expand their one point lead to
a 40-30 margin with 4:18
remaining. SSU (7-3) had a
10-0 run late in the first half.
Crissa Jackson had 15 points
for the winners while Raven
James grabbed 10 rebounds.
SS Men Fall To 4-6
St. Bonaventure opened the
second half with a 15-0 run to
take a 50-22 lead as the
Bonni es rolled past
Savannah State 79-47 in the
Reilly Center before 3,331
fans. With just over five min
utes remaining, SSU trailed
72-35. Tracy Rankins had 11
points for the Tigers and Ra
shad Hassan added 10. St.
Bonaventure (6-3) shot 60
percent from the floor in the
second half and 53.3 percent
for the game.

Village in a special Service
of Appreciation and
Remembrance at the
Savannah Baptist Center

There was powerful
music and inspirational
words from the heart.

I. L. Fleming, Inc. con
tinued its trend by successful
ly competing for a
$16,260,000 contract to
design and construct the
Brigade Headquarters facility
at Fort Stewart, Georgia. This
contract was awarded on
Aug. 27, 2009. The work has
an estimated completion date
of February 28, 2011.
In addition, on
November 30, 2009, the com
pany was awarded a
$10,960,000 contract to build
a Brigade/Batallion
Headquarters at Fort
Campbell, Kentucky.
During the Gala,
Fleming attributed the suc
cess of his business to the
dedication of his staff, and
encouraged his employees to
remain focused during the
months and years ahead. “We
must keep our eyes on the
prize,” he said.

165 surprised Fleming by
presenting him with an exec
utive leadership award.
Williams said that he was
proud to have Mr. and Mrs.
Fleming as his friends and
constituents. He commend
ed them for their entrepre
neurial leadership, and said
he was honored to have I. L.
Fleming, Inc. headquartered
in Midway. Representative
Williams is a member of the
State Economic
Development and Tourism
Committee and former chair
man of the Georgia
Legislative Black Caucus
and its Industry and
Economic Development
Committee.
Fleming and his busi
ness are long-time customers
of Carver State Bank.
Claudia Clarke, Vice
President and Manager of the

Branch said that it was a
wonderful evening, and that
she was pleased that she and
