Firefighters Receive Gift Certificates
SFES Chief Charles G. Middleton, and "B" Shift/2nd Battalion Firefighters at Station #2
Savannah firefighters
who work Christmas Day
will be getting a little help in

thanks to the Georgia
Firefighters Burn
Foundation, Inc.
Dennis Gardin,
Executive Director of the
Bum Foundation, accompa
nied Savannah Fire Chief
Charles D. Middleton to fire
stations in each of the city’s
three Battalions December
16, 2009 to present Kroger
gift certificates to SFES per
sonnel who will be on shift
Christmas day. Gardin is a
burn survivor who, as a
child, was rescued from a
burning house by firefight
ers.
Gardin said he never
got to thank the firefighters
who saved his life 40 years
ago but today he expressed
his personal appreciation to
Savannah firefighters for the
work they perform and the
service they provide.
Chief Middleton also
expressed his personal grati
tude to the men and women
of the department for sacri
ficing their Christmas holi
day to help ensure everyone
else can celebrate safely.
Middleton and Gardin met
with firefighters at SFES
Station #6 (3000 Liberty
Parkway), Station # 2 (5
Skyline Dr.) and Station #13
(11 McKenna Dr.) and pre
sented the gift certificates,
which are redeemable for a
turkey or ham at Kroger, to
the 22 fire department com
panies of “B” shift which will
be on duty Christmas Day.
Starting on Monday,
December 28 through
Wednesday, December 30,
two former Harlem
Globetrotters, Larry “Gator”
Rivers and Tyrone
“Hollywood” Brown will
conduct a basketball clinic in
fundamentals of fun for kids
in Kindergarten through fifth
grade.
“We just want to teach
the kids the love of the game,
the skills, and how to enjoy
themselves,” says Gator
Rivers, a native Savannahian
and former Harlem
Globetrotter. “My desire is to
use my life experiences to
help kids make good deci
sions and have a great
future.”
The clinic is the brain
child of Rivers, who has had
success with similar clinics
in other areas. He is probably
best known for his Gator
Ball Academy, where Rivers
can teach any kid to play.
“It’s not just about skill. Lots
of kids are bom with it. But I
believe that anyone can
develop it if they have the
right coach. It’s all about
finding out who you are and
how much potential you real
ly have,” says Rivers.
Rivers, who is relocat
ing to his hometown of
Savannah, is hoping that this
clinic will lead to the estab
lishment of a regular league.
Using the West Broad Street
YMCA as his home base,
Rivers wants to see basket
ball leagues for grade school
age kids from across
Savannah.
The clinic is open to all
children in grade school
from kindergarten to fifth
grade. There will be teams
for boys and for girls. All
who participate in the clinic
may also participate in the
grade school league starting
at the West Broad Street
YMCA in January.
The clinic will run on
Monday, December 28,
Tuesday, December 29, and
Wednesday, December 30
from 9 am to 12 noon.
Registrations are on a first
come-first served basis.
There are limited slots
available in each age group.
The West Broad Street
YMCA is located at 1110
May Street in Savannah.
