AASU Gets Approval to Grant Doctor
of Physical Therapy Degree
Armstrong Atlantic
State University (AASU) is
now authorized to offer
selected doctoral degree pro
grams following approval by
the Southern Association of
Colleges and Schools
(SACS). The change allows
AASU to offer its Doctor of
Physical Therapy (DPT)
degree independently.
“This approval by
SACS raises the level of the
institution as a whole and
will have a positive impact
on the quality of the educa
tion we provide, not only
through the College of
Health Professions, but
across all colleges and disci
plines” said AASU President
Linda Bleicken.
“The approval by SACS
validates our ongoing ability
to offer an excellent physical
therapy program. This has
been a very carefully planned
process and represents the
culmination of years of hard
work,” said Anne Thompson,
interim head of the AASU
Department of Physical
Therapy .
AASU has been offer
ing the DPT degree through a
consortium with the Medical
College of Georgia and North
Georgia College and State
University since 2006. That
consortium was dissolved in
July 2009. In October 2009,
The Board of Regents of the
University System of
Georgia approved AASU’s
proposal to offer the degree
independently from the con
sortium.
Since its inception
in 1994, the physical therapy
program at AASU has been
highly regarded. In 2001, it
was recognized as a Board of
Regents Program of
Excellence. The program was
initially accredited in 1997
by the Commission on
Accreditation in Physical
Therapy Education and has
held continuous accreditation
throughout its history.
Currently, AASU
enrolls 20 students each year
into its DPT program. The
Bachelor of Science in
Rehabilitation Sciences, also
in the Department of
Physical Therapy, enrolls 260
students, many of whom
aspire to a career in physical
therapy.
“We consider the
approval by SACS to allow
AASU to offer doctoral
degrees as a serious responsi
bility,” said Bleicken. “I want
to thank Dr. Thompson and
my predecessor, Dr. Thomas
Z. Jones, who have been
instrumental in accomplish
ing this important milestone
for Armstrong Atlantic.”

Olive Oil - The Heart Of It
The goal of this column and
the goal of the Health
Restoration 101 programs
are to help to maximize your
chances of living a longer,
healthier life.
Including Olive Oil in
our diet daily can decrease
heart attacks and their com
plications.
Extra virgin olive oil is
one of the most powerful
anti-inflammatory foods cur
rently known. By helping to
prevent and reverse the dam
age done in the body by free
radicals, olive oil’s compo
nents have been heralded for
thousands of years. Studies
old and new confirm what
Socrates knew in 400B.C. as
he prescribed olive oil for
ulcers, gallbladder problem,
muscle aches and many other
conditions.
A deficiency of the
essential fatty acids con
tained in Olive oil can lead to
hair loss, liver and kidney
problems, mental confusion,
high triglycerides, high
blood pressure and heart
attacks, and sticky platelets,
which can lead to blood
clots.
As rust corrodes and
eats away metal, so will LDL
(bad cholesterol) cause oxi
dation in our bodies, creat
ing a kind of rust which
results in cell damage that
leads to heart attack and
strokes. This oxidative
ta L
Carolyn Guilford, CNC
process causes inflammation
all over the body, and many
scientists believe is the
underlying cause of all dis
ease processes, including all
cancers, muscular and skele
tal diseases, diabetes, gall
stones, and even edema.
So, what to do? Add
extra virgin olive oil to your
diet everyday. Take a table
spoon each morning, then
add a tablespoon to your
salad, or drizzle on cooked
veggies, a rice dish, after
you’ve plated it. Or, dip
your bread in olive oil
instead of using butter or
margarine. (I hope you are
not still using margarine).
Purchase ‘cold pressed’
or ‘extra virgin’ olive oil in
large containers, pour into
smaller bottles for daily use,
store the remainder in a cool,
dry, dark place. It does not
need to be refrigerated. Use
freely and so that it does not
become rancid.
Do not use for high heat
cooking such as frying. High
heat destroys the nutrients
and degrades and diminishes
the health benefits of the
olive oil.
Olive oil is also
great on the skin as a mois
turizer, apply to clean skin
morning and night, and is
fine to use under makeup. As
a hair conditioner, apply
warm, cover with plastic cap
for one hour - to 24 hours
(your discretion), wash and
style.
The heart of the matter
is that making olive oil a part
our daily lives has many uses
and health benefits. I think
you will love the results.
