Miracle on May Street a Huge Success
toy for Christmas," Doliber
said.
The gymnasium of the
Y is turned into "Santa's
Workshop" with rows of
tables lined with items
organized by type; clothing
in one place all separated by
size and neatly labeled, girls
toys, boys toys, infant toys,
games, electronics, books, a
mound of stuffed animals,
and big items such as bikes
lining the wall complete the
workshop. Santa's "elves"
(volunteers from the commu

families through as they

In 2008 the Miracle
on May Street served 250
children. This year the total
is at a staggering 560. "That
just shows the huge need in
the community, and, more
importantly, the generosity
of all of those folks who
helped out. Everyone who
came through is going to
have a very merry
Christmas," said Doliber.

Organizations Receive
Grassroots Grants
Eight Savannah-based
non-profit organizations
were selected to receive
funding from the Grassroots

(AWOL); the City of Tybee

Coastal Puppetry Guild;
Savannah Danse Theatre;
and the Savannah Ogeechee

Started in 1993, the
purpose of the Grassroots
Arts Program is to develop
the capacity of emerging
organizations; encourage
organizations to utilize the
arts to address community
needs; and foster accessibil

served communities.
The program is sup

Georgia Council for the Arts
through an appropriation of
the Georgia General
Assembly and administered
by the City of Savannah's
Department of Cultural
Affairs.
“During times like this
it’s refreshing to help
administer a program like
the Grassroots Arts
Program,” said Michelle
Hunter, the city’s cultural
affairs coordinator. “It
shows the state is still com
mitted to helping emerging
organizations provide such
valuable programs to the
community.”
The following events
are being presented through
the Grassroots Arts Program
in 2010.
