MUMC Team Member Named
Pharmacist of the Year
Ken Jozefczyk, M.S.,
R.Ph., FASHP, director of
pharmacy at Memorial
University Medical Center
(MUMC), has been named
the 2009 Pharmacist of the
Year by The Georgia Society
of Health-System
Pharmacists (GSHP).
This award is the high
est honor GSHP can bestow
on any member. Jozefczyk
was honored for his out
standing service and his par
ticipation in GSHP.
Jozefczyk's accom
plishments include helping
to improve medication man
agement and medication
safety, including leading the
initiative to address medica
tion reconciliation by re
organizing pharmacy work
flow at MUMC. He also
established a Medication
Safety Committee that
reviews all facets of medica
tion management and identi
fies opportunities for

Jozefczyk is currently
the co-chair of GSHP's pub
lic relations committee and
also served as the GSHP
southeastern district director.
He holds an adjunct
faculty appointment to the
University of Georgia
College of Pharmacy and
instructs students and resi
dents at MUMC. He is a past
president of the West
Virginia Society of Health
System Pharmacists and a
fellow of the American
Association of Health
System Pharmacists.

ized healthcare settings.

Chatham County Courthouse

On Monday, December
7, 2009, seven Law &
Government Explorers from
Savannah-Chatham public
high schools attended an
Exploring event at the
Chatham County
Courthouse.
The students were able
to observe live court ses
sions, tour the various
departments and participate
in a discussion with Judge
Penny Haas Freeseman.
Special thanks are
extended to Nan Gamer at
the Chatham County
Courthouse for organizing
these activities, Judge
Freeseman for her participa
tion, and attorneys Drew
Wilkes and Brad Harmon for
their assistance with this
Explorer Post event.

Apprenticeship and Work-
based Learning Coordinator
for the Savannah Chatham
Public High Schools, for her
assistance in organizing this
year’s Exploring programs.

Savannah Music Festival Receives
Jazz.NEXT Grant
SWING CENTRAL,
the nationally acclaimed
high school jazz band com
petition and workshop pro
duced by the Savannah
Music Festival (SMF), is the
subject of a new media proj
ect that utilizes technology to
enhance the promotion of
jazz music and education.
SMF is one of only five
recipients of first-round
funding from the national
Jazz.NEXT initiative, also
including NPR, Monterey
Jazz Festival, Walker Art
Center and the National
Federation of Community
Broadcasters.
The project is funded
by Mid Atlantic Arts
Foundation through the gen
erous support of the Doris
Duke Charitable Foundation.
“Through this technolo
gy project, we’re making our
unique jazz education efforts
accessible to the masses,”
remarks SMF Associate
Artistic Director of Jazz
Education, Marcus Roberts.
“The internet is now a pri
mary learning tool for people
of all ages, and young people
such as the participants in
our Swing Central program
will benefit greatly from the
lessons, artist interviews and
audio/video performances
that will be hosted at swing-
centraljazz.org.”
Over the next two
years, the
swingcentraljazz.org tech
nology initiative will com
bine video and audio docu
mentation of SMF’s jazz pro
grams, social and other digi
tal media, and traditional
broadcast to promote its
efforts to a broader audience,
offer supplemental educa
tional content to young jazz
musicians, reinforce the cre
ative and academic work of
jazz artists, enhance commu
nication between students
and teachers, and connect
members of the jazz commu
nity with each other.
The Center for New
American Media from New
York City has been selected
to handle video documentary
work relating to the project,
and Heideldesign from
Savannah will be SMF’s dig
ital media partner.
In addition to its wide
use within swingcentral-
jazz.org, the video documen
tation of the 2010 SWING
CENTRAL program will be
used to produce a documen
tary promoting the impor
tance of mentorship and
teamwork within the jazz tra
dition.
The Center for New
American Media and its cre
ative partners (Louis
Alvarez, Andrew Kolker, and
Peter Odabashian) have cre
ated some of the most hon
ored and critically praised
documentaries on American
life and culture over the past
25 years.
Twice winners of both
the Peabody Award and the
duPont-C olumbia
Journalism Award, their
work, all of which premiered
on public television, includes
People Like Us: Social Class
in America, Vote for Me:
Politics in America, and
American Tongues, which
deals with American accents.
Heideldesign, managed
by lead designer and owner,
Lee Heidel, has been on the
leading edge of web design
and development since 1998.
Their web development
work is featured on the
newly redesigned savannah-
musicfestival.org.

Emergency Services Bureau
is helping to brighten
Christmas day for some
Savannah youngsters.

new bicycles to the
Greenbriar Children’s Center
this morning.
Middleton, flanked by
firefighters from Engine
Company 5-C and Fire
Marshal Deon Groover, pre
sented the bikes to
Greenbriar’s Executive
Director Gena Taylor this
morning at the Hopkins St.
Center.
The bicycles were
donated to SFES by KMART
on Montgomery Crossroads.
KMART General
Manager Eddie Rainwater
partnered with SFES this
year as a way of bringing
some holiday cheer into the
lives of deserving children.
The bicycles will be
shared by the children at
Greenbriar, a facility that
cares for Savannah area
youths who are awaiting
placement with foster fami
lies.
Savannah firefighters
wish everyone happy and
fire safe holidays and remind
citizens to practice fire safety
with regard holiday decora
tions and while preparing
holiday meals.
