Can Energy Drinks Be Dangerous?
The goal of this column and
the goal of the Health
Restoration 101 programs
are to help to maximize your
chances of living a longer,
healthier life.
Have you noticed this
new craze, the energy drink?
Many today are looking for a
burst of energy, or to lift their
mood, and turning to the lit
tle cans and bottles called
Energy Drinks.
It may seem innocent
enough according to the
advertising. Burst of energy,
vitamins and herbs, sugar.
Nothing unusual, right? But
perhaps we should take a
closer look.
Would you be surprised
to know these drinks have
become very popular with
teens and many young
adults? And has become a
multi billion dollar industry?
Remember when
Gatorade was a sports drink
for athletes, to give them the
salts and fluids they lost dur
ing sports training and in the
games, then went main
stream. These energy drinks
may be an up grade of the
sports drink.
After drinking the ener
gy drink, and getting the
desired effect, that mood
boost or burst of energy, the
energy crash is likely to fol
low.
The cycle begins with
another energy drink, to get
past that crash. The habit
begins. Two or three drinks
per day. A poll I took recent
ly included college students
who say they like the drinks
because they also boost their
memory during study at
exam time, and often get into
the habit of drinking 3 to 4
Carolyn Guilford, CNC
per day, sometimes for days
at a time.
This new trend is caus
ing great concern for family
members when their young
sters present at the emer
gency room with a wide vari
ety of complaints such as
nausea, dehydration, palpita
tions, sweating, insomnia
and abnormal heart rhythms.
Some have had heart attacks
and died, especially after
adding alcohol to the mix.
(Never Drink Alcohol When
Drinking Any Energy
Drink).
Energy drinks may con
tain mega doses of caffeine,
sugar, and a mix of herbs that
can be dangerous to certain
persons, young, older, per
sons with diabetes, heart dis
ease, and other health con
cerns.
Many persons may not
be aware of health issues
until the stress of palpitations
or an abnormal heart rhythm
or dehydration sends them to
the ER.
Boost your energy in a
healthy way, with a healthy
lifestyle, good diet, lots of
water, exercise every day,
and a good nights sleep,
every night. If you need
something more, try a one
ingredient supplement such
as Ginseng, an herb known to
increase energy, relieve
stress, and increase memory.
Ginkgo biloba, also for mem
ory enhancement. Milk
Thistle to detoxify the liver
and allow it to function bet
ter. L-Carnitine, an amino
acid which helps rev-up
metabolism and increase
energy.
Then add a really good
multi vitamin supplement
(liquid) for an over-all nutri
tional boost to the body’s
cells.
Give your body a break
from caffeine, sugar and the
mix of herbs which may not
work well together especially
with medications you may
already be taking. Save your
money and maybe your life.

Memorial’s Breast Care Program
Granted Prestigious Accreditation
The breast care servic

the National Accreditation
Program for Breast Centers
(NAPBC), a program of the
American College of

A physician from the
NAPBC analyzed the ACI's
cancer committee leadership,
cancer data management,
clinical services, research,
community outreach, and
quality improvement pro
grams and performed an
onsite survey on November
16, 2009.
This is a new accredita
tion and to date there are just
over 100 centers across the
United States that have
undergone the process and
achieved this prestigious
accreditation accomplish
ment. ACI is the only facility
in the region and one of only
two centers to be accredited
in the State of Georgia.
“The ACI is proud
to offer our patients every
significant advantage in the
battle against breast cancer.
We have the only physician
practice in the region dedi
cated solely to women's
breast health (The Breast
Center) with two, board-cer
tified breast surgeon special
ists. We also have a board-
certified, dedicated, full-time
breast imaging specialist. We
offer comprehensive and fast
mammography services,
expert surgical care, the lat
est high-dose rate radiation
therapy, a strong survivor
ship program, and a variety
of support services,” said
Steven Brower, M.D., FACS,
senior vice president and
director of the ACI.
The NAPBC accredita
tion ensures that patients
have access to:
Comprehensive care, includ
ing state-of-the art services
and equipment; A multispe
cialty team approach to coor
dinate the best treatment
options; Information about
ongoing clinical trials and
new treatment options;
Ongoing monitoring and
improvement of care; Quality
breast care close to home
The NAPBC represents
a consortium of national pro
fessional organizations dedi
cated to the improvement of
the quality of care and moni
toring of outcomes of patients
with diseases of the breast.
