UNCF Receives Art of Renowned
Artist Benny Andrews

UNCF-the United
Negro College Fund-the
nation’s largest and most
effective minority education
organization has announced
that the Benny Andrews
Foundation selected UNCF
to receive 128 pieces of his
art collection and to assist
with the exhibition of his art
in the collections of UNCF’s
historically black colleges
and universities, African
American museums, and
other places where people
come together to learn about
culture and American life.
The Savannah Chapter
of Top Ladies of Distinction,
Incorporated (TLOD) held
its annual fundraising event,
the Kiddie Kotillion
Beautillion, on Saturday,
December 12,2009 in the
auditorium of Johnson High
School.
The selected theme for
this gala event was "The
Magic of Christmas". Lady
Johnnie S. Holmes served as
the General Chairperson,
along with a dedicated group
of Ladies. Within a short
period of time, they were
able to plan and execute a
very elegant pageant.
As a major fundraiser,
the proceeds are utilized to
make contributions to vari
ous charitable organizations
within the local community,
which include the NAACP,
the National Council of
Negro Women, the West ,
Broad Street YMCA, the
Susan Komen Breast Cancer
Foundation, the M. L. King,
Jr. Observance Committee,
and the March of Dimes.
Funds are also utilized to
award scholarships to
deserving freshman college
students at Savannah State
University.
The contestants com
peted enthusiastically to be
recognized as the King or
Queen for the 2009 Kiddie
Kotillion Beautillion. The
Queen and her Court were:
“The work of this
accomplished and visionary
artist has been exhibited in
some of the world’s most
important permanent collec
tions. He will be remem
bered for generations, both
for his art and for his gen
erosity and belief in UNCF’s
mission and education,’’said
Michael L. Lomax, UNCF
president and CEO.
Bom in rural Georgia in
1930, Benny Andrews grew
up picking cotton with his
family, but his mother insist
ed that her family get the

Annette S. Mitchell, and
members of the local chapter
are indeed grateful to all con
testants, the
parents/guardians, program
participants, and the
Savannah community for the
support given to make this
event so successful.
The organizations
would like to recognize the

graduated from Fort Valley
State College, a Georgia
HBCU and the world-
famous Chicago Art
Institute.
His paintings hang in
major museums including
the Art Institute of Chicago,
Atlanta’s High Museum of
Art and the Metropolitan
Museum of Art and the
Museum of Modern Art,
both in New York. Andrews
died in Brooklyn, New York
on November 10, 2006.

On Saturday
December 5, 2009, more
than one hundred school-
aged children and their par
ents/guardians attended the
School Citizenship
Education Workshop and
Christmas Gifts Program,
sponsored by The Hungry
Club Forum of Savannah,
Inc. (HCFS) and co-spon
sored by the Georgia
Association of Black
Women Attorneys
(GABWA) and the U. S.
Census Bureau 2010
Accurate Census Count.
Dr. Richardean Golden
Anderson, Founder and
CEO, Fulton Leadership
Academy, the stateis first
charter school for boys,
served as the keynote speak
er on the issue of “When We
Plant a SEED: What Lasting
Gifts Can We Give to the
Youth of Our Community.”
Elder Michael E.
Harvey, Assistant Pastor of
Haynes Temple Holiness
Church and President of the
Bibb County Mentors
Project also spoke. The pro
gram followed the regularly
scheduled first Saturday
breakfast forum of The
HCFS, and was held in the
Multipurpose Annex of the
West Broad Street YMCA.
Highlights for the youth
were the quality gifts pre
sented to the children who
reside in the Kayton and
Frazier Home Housing
Projects.

GA, also participated in the
educational and festive pro
gram.

Census and Chatham
County Commission
Chairman Pete Liakakis
made appeals to the audi
ence to get involved in help
ing to make sure that
Savannah-Chatham County
gets an accurate census
count.
The count determines
the amount of political rep
resentation we have in the
Congress and other federal
positions and the amount of
federal funds coming to our
community. When census
forms are mailed in March,
they must be returned no
later than April 1, 2010.
