I reed cm rides -andiry to untllfstend why he must do so If his repressed emotions are not released in nonvio
lent ways, they will seek expression through violence this is noi a threat hut a faci of history So i have not
said to my people: "Gel rid of y^mr discontent." Rather. I have tried to say that this normal and healthy discon
tent can be channeled into the creative outlet of nonviolent direct action And now this approach is being
termed extremis! Bui though I was initially disappointed at being categorized as an extremist, as i continued
to think about the matter I gradua ly gained a measure of saiisfaction from the label Was not Jesus an extrem-
isi to I love - "Love your enemies, Oless them that curse you. do good lothem that hate you. and pray for them
which despileful ly use you, and persecute you." Was not Amos an extremist for justice. "Lei justice roll down
like waters and iIghteousness like an ever Mowing stream" Was not Paul an extremist for the Christian gospel:
"I beai in my hotly the marks of ihe Lord Jesus " Was not Martin Luther an extremist "Here I stand I cannot
do otherwise, so help me God " And John Bunyan "I will stay in jail lo the end of my days before l make a
butchery of my conscience "And Abraham Lincoln- "This nation cannot survive half slave and half free "And
Thomas Jefferson "We hold ihese truths lo be self evident, that all men are created equal " So the question
is noi whether we will be extremists, but what kind of extremists we will be. Will we be extremists for hate or
for lover? will we be extremes for Ihe preservation of injustice or for the extension of justice? In that dramatic
scene on Calvary's hill three men were crucified We must never forget that all ihree were crucified for the
same cnme-lhe crime of extremism Two were extremists for immorality, and thus fell below their environment.
The other, Jesus Christ, was an extremist for love, truth and goodness, ana thereby rose above his environ
ment. Perhaps the South, the nation and Ihe world are in dire need of Creative extremists.-Letter from the Bir
mingham Jail. April 16.1963

Daniels to Speak at
MLK Observance Day Breakfast
Jewel Daniels
By Tina A. Brown
For The Savannah Tribune
Author and public rela
tions business woman Jewel
Daniels - the keynote speaker
of the Dr. Martin King Jr.'s
Observance Day Business
Community Breakfast - plans
to remind Savannah's busi
ness leaders this week that
they must be accountable in
their communities.
Educators and com
munity leaders often focus
upon Dr. King as an individ
ual leader. They forget that
his father created a founda
tion for which he stood,
Daniels said.
“I want to give a slight
ly different perspective on
Martin and why he got
involved in the civil rights
community. When I was
younger, I never remembered
being taught that he came
from a long line of leaders.
His father was active in the
church and the civil rights
community before him. It
showed me that we are all
accountable as leaders," she
said.
Daniels, 41, the presi
dent of Daniels
Communications, will be
making her presentation at
8:30 a.m. Jan. 16 at the
Savannah International Trade
& Convention Center. Tickets
are $30 and available for pur
chase at 1202 MLK Jr. Blvd.
weekdays after 3 p.m.
