First African American in Space to Be
Inducted into Astronaut Hall of Fame
Guion “Guy” Bluford
(Taylor Media
Services) The first African
American to fly in space
Guion “Guy” Bluford will
be inducted into the U.S.
Astronaut Hall of Fame this
coming June.
NASA announced his
selection last week along
with those of astronauts Ken
Bowersox, Frank Culbertson
and Kathy Thornton.
Bluford made his historic
space flight in 1983.
However, he was
not the first Black person in
space. That honor goes to
Cuban cosmonaut Arnaldo
Tamayo-Mendez. He flew in
space aboard a then-Soviet
Soyuz 38 on September 18,
1980. Meanwhile, Bluford’s
induction will take place on
June 5, 2010 at the Kennedy
Space Center.
Bluford attended pilot
training at Williams Air
Force Base, and received his
pilot wings in January 1966.
He then went to F-4C com
bat crew training in Arizona
and Florida and was assigned
to the 557th Tactical Fighter
Squadron, Cam Ranh Bay,
Vietnam. He flew 144 com
bat missions, 65 of which
were over North Vietnam.
In July 1967, he was
assigned to the 3,630th
Flying Training Wing,
Sheppard Air Force Base,
Texas, as a T-38A instructor
pilot. He served as a stan
dardization/evaluation offi
cer and as an assistant flight
commander. In early 1971,
he attended Squadron
Officers School and returned
as an executive support offi
cer to the Deputy
Commander of Operations
and as School Secretary for
the Wing.
Bluford has written and
presented several scientific
papers in the area of compu
tational fluid dynamics. He
has logged over 5,200 hours
of jet flight time in the T-33,
T-37, T-38, F4C, U-2/TR-1,
and F-5A/B, including 1,300
hours as a T-38 instructor
pilot.

JCB Donates $150,000 Worth Of
Equiptment to Haiti Quake Disaster
JCB is donating this equipment to be sent to Haiti to help with disaster relief
JCB, the world’s third
largest manufacturer of con
struction equipment, is
donating equipment worth
$150,000 to help the disas
ter relief effort in Haiti fol
lowing the devastating
earthquake that is feared to
have killed tens of thou
sands of people.
The gift of two 3CX
backhoe loaders is being
made by JCB Chairman Sir
Anthony Bamford in
response to an appeal from
relief agencies for foreign
aid.
Sir Anthony Bamford
said: “The scale of the dev
astation is unimaginable
and it’s heart-rending to see
the human suffering caused
by the disaster. There is
clearly a lack of equipment
on the island and I hope our
gift of JCB machines will
help in some small way to
alleviate that suffering and
in the rebuilding in the
aftermath of the earth
quake.”
The machines are
being made available to the
US Government and its aid
agencies, which are taking a
leading role in the relief
effort on the Caribbean
island. The earthquake,
measuring 7.0 on the
Richter Scale, has damaged
the port and has created a
number of logistical chal
lenges hindering supplies
entering the nation.
John Patterson,
Chairman and CEO of JCB
Inc., says, “We are working
with the State Department
with the help of the Georgia
delegation and their staff on
the Hill. We want utilize the
most efficient channels
available to ensure that the
machines reach the agencies
and the people that need
them. Our thoughts and
prayers are with the people
of Haiti.”
The contribution to the
aid effort follows a series of
other JCB machinery dona
tions in recent years to other
parts of the world hit by
natural disasters, including
the 2008 earthquake in
Sichuan province in China,
when six backhoe loaders
worth over $600,000 and a
team of operators were sent
from the company’s factory
in Shanghai to help the
clear-up effort in the region.
JCB also donated
machines worth more than
$2 million to help in the
aftermath of the Asian
Tsunami in 2004, with JCB
diggers deployed to
Thailand, southern India,
Sri Lanka and Indonesia.
Last year the company
donated an excavator and a
backhoe loader worth
$250,000 to help the disas
ter relief effort in the city of
Padang following the dev
astating earthquake that
struck off the Indonesian
island of Sumatra.
