ESL Students Collect Money to
Support Haitian Relief
Savannah Technical
College ESL students have
launched a fund drive to
support Haitian relief
efforts in the wake of this
week’s earthquake. The stu
dents will be collecting
money on Tuesday, January
19 from 7:45 - 2 p.m. in
Trailer 6 on the college’s
Savannah Campus.
Donations will also be
accepted by the cashier in
the Campus Shop.
Money raised will be
donated to Doctors Without
Borders to support that
organization’s work in the
region.
When the earthquake
hit Port au Prince, Haiti this
week, one Savannah
Technical College
student was especially
affected - her family,
including her son, brother
and niece who were work
ing to come to America -
were at home in Haiti. She
has since heard that they
survived the quake, but
their home was destroyed.
Another student, a doctor
from Argentina, has experi
ence with Doctors Without
Borders and will facilitate
the group’s gift.
ESL Department Head
and longtime instructor
Karen Penick says it’s not
uncommon for her students
to respond to world events.
“We make an effort to
keep them in touch with
what’s going on in the
world because it has a spe
cial significance for them,”
she says.
Previous efforts have
included raising money
when there was flooding in
Africa last year and in sup
port of relief efforts for
tropical storms and hurri
canes affecting Caribbean
countries.
Savannah Technical
College has more than 100
international students from
30 countries.
Be listening to Joy 100 through the month of January
ond February os we present special tributes.
