Chairman Liakakis Collects Supplies
for Haitian Relief
County Commission
Chairman, Pete Liakakis is
continuing to collect sup
plies for county-wide effort
to respond to the tragedy in
Haiti.
Savannah Responds
has established a drop off
location for donations in
the vacant lot at the corner
of Mall Boulevard and
Abercorn Street with col
lections running through
Sunday, January 31.
Hours of collection
are from 8AM to 8PM
seven days a week.
Donations that are
needed are: Canned Foods,
Cereals, Rice, Bottled
Water, Paper Products,
Toothpaste and Brushes,
Soap, Alcohol,
Disinfectants, Rope, Tarps,
Mops, Brooms, Bucks,
Hammers, Screwdrivers,
Pliers, Shovels, Axes,
Rakes, Saws, Drills,
Gloves, Flashlights,
Lanterns, Batteries,
Generators, Chain Saws,
Tents, Sleeping Bags and
New Clothes.
Savannah Responds
was founded by Chairman
Liakakis in 1961 to provide
aid to the Savannah area
and other places hit by
floods, hurricanes and
other natural disasters.
Throughout the years
food, goods, equipment and
volunteers have been sent
to locations as far away as
Italy and as near as
Charleston, SC and South
Florida, in addition to here.

Lady Tigers Scare
Ga. Tech
Savannah State put a scare
into 22nd ranked Georgia
Tech on January 21 in Atlanta
but the Yellow Jackets woke
up in the second half and
went on to roll to a 80-51
win. SSU led 26-22 with 2:44
left in the first half but Tech
ended the period with eight
straight points for a 30-26
halftime advantage. Tech out-
scored SSU 50-25 in the sec
ond half. Courtney Long led
SSU (8-15) with a game high
15 points. Crissa Jackson
added 13 points and four
assists. Long also had seven
rebounds. Savannah State fell
at North Carolina Central 50-
46 on Jan. 18. SSU sliced a
16 point deficit to four but
could not get any closer.
Long had 13 points, six
rebounds and four steals for
SSU. Jackson added nine
points, five steals and four
rebounds. Carlita Johnson
and Alisha Nelson had 12
rebounds each.

Central 46-44 in overtime at
Tiger Arena on Jan. 20. SSU

lied to send the game into an
extra period tied at 36 as
Rashad Hassan made a layup
with eight seconds left. In the
overtime, Hassan scored five
points and pulled down five
rebounds. Hassan had 14
points and nine boards and
Louis had 10 rebounds.
Tigers Run At

the women's 400m race and
3rd in the 400m race to lead
the Savannah State indoor
track team at the 32nd

women's 4x400m relay team
was 6th and Amber Hughes
was 8th in the triple jump.
Marcus Stallworth was 6th in
the men's 60m hurdles and
the men's 4x400m relay team

Recruits Visit SSU
The Savannah State football
program hosted 13 recruits on
January 23. As well as tour
ing the campus, the recruits
and their parents also attend
ed the SSU basketball game
with Longwood. Of the visi
tors, 12 are in high school
and one is looking to transfer
from a Division I school.
Head coach Robby Wells
expects to have more recruits
visit on Jan. 30.
Hungry Club Forum to Hear
Harris Neck Land Trust Plan
On Saturday February 6,
2010, at 9:30 AM, Dave
Kelly, coordinator of the
Harris Neck Community
Land Trust, will present the
organizationls economic and
community development
plans at The Hungry Club
Forum of Savannah, Inc.
(HCFS).
The presentation will be
the main feature of The
HCFS’s monthly community
breakfast forum and round
table, to be held in the
Multipurpose Annex of the
West Broad Street YMCA,
located at 1110 May Street,
near W. Gwinnett Street.
Many of Savannah’s
African Americans have
roots in the Harris Neck com
munity located in the
McIntosh County, GA area of
David Kelly
Liberty County.
The Harris Neck Justice
Movement is at the center of
the effort to reclaim, from the
federal government, the
2,824 acres of land for its
rightful owners.
Dave Kelly is a writer
and community organizer
with a diverse background,
starting in publishing, then
shifting to corporate commu
nications and public rela
tions. After leaving the cor
porate world in New York,
Kelly moved to New
England where he produced
and hosted an environmental
and social issues radio pro
gram called “Our Sustainable
Future.”
He transitioned into the
social justice arena, and for
most of last 15 years, has
worked in the non-profit sec
tor, concentrating on issues
of education and training,
jobs creation, homelessness,
and eco and heritage tourism.

Free Tax Returns
Available at Super
Saturday Event
The City of Savannah is
proud to take part in the first of
four Free Tax Return
Preparation Super Saturdays,
from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the
Coastal Georgia Center, 305
Fahm Street.
Residents can get
their tax returns prepared for
FREE by IRS-trained volun
teers. For the first time, this
year residents will also have
the option of receiving a low-
cost Alternative Rapid
Anticipation Loan (ARAL).
Offered for a fraction of the
cost charged at commercial tax
preparation sites, ARALs
allow you to get your refund
within 48 hours. These rapid
refunds are only available
through Feb. 13.
The other three Super
Saturdays will be held at the
Coastal Georgia Center from
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 30, Feb.
6, and Feb. 13.
The City of Savannah's
Economic Development
Department is sponsoring four
other Volunteer Income Tax
Assistance (VITA) sites
through April 15. They are
located at:
Moses Jackson / Golden Age
Center, 1210 Richards Street,
Savannah (Open Tuesdays, 9
a.m. - 2 p.m.)
Savannah Entrepreneurial
Center 801 E. Gwinnett Street,
Savannah (Open Mondays &
Wednesdays, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.)
Neighborhood Improvement
Association, 1816 Abercorn
Street, Savannah (Open
Thursdays, 5-8 p.m.)
St. Mary’s Community Center,
812 West 36th (Wednesdays,
4-7 p.m.)
These and more than a
dozen other VITA sites
throughout the community are
part of the larger Chatham-
Savannah Asset Development
Coalition, and can be found on
the organization's website at
csadc.net or by calling 447-
5577.
Last year volunteers at
the VITA sites prepared 3,828
tax returns, helping residents
claim $4.1 million in refunds,
including $2.2 million in
Earned Income Tax Credit
available to those on limited
incomes.
Those who attend the
Super Saturday events or any
of the VITA sites should bring
a valid identification, Social
Security card for all family
members who will be claimed
on the return, and any W-2,
1099, interest income or child
care information forms.
