The Covenant Names
of God
Evangelist Rachel Thomas
There are eight covenant
names by which God
revealed Himself and His
purpose to Israel. These
names comprehend the bene
fits God made available to
Israel through His covenant.
Whoever knew those names
and called upon the God they
represented had God’s prom
ise that he would behave
toward them in the fashion
demanded by each of His
titles.
Here are the names
listed in the order of their
historical relation to Israel:
Yahweh-Jireh-The Lord our
Provider- Genesis 22:8, 14;
Yahweh-Rapha-The Lord
our Healer- Exodus
15:26;Yahweh -Nissi-The
Lord our Banner -Exodus
17:15; Yahweh- Qadesh The
Lord our Sanctifier-Leviticus
20:8, Ezekiel 20:12;Yahweh
Shalom -The Lord our Peace
Judges 6:24; Yahweh Raah-
The Lord our Shepherd
Psalms 23:1; Yahweh-
Tsidkenu -The Lord our
Righteousness -Jeremiah
23:6;Yahweh - Shammah-
The Lord Ever Present -
Ezekiel 48:35
Yahweh is peculiarly the per
son name by which the Lord
God revealed Himself to
Israel. It stands in contrast
with other more or less
impersonal titles by which
God was also known -
Elohim, Adonai, and El
Elyon. Yahweh was espe
cially used to express the
personal covenant the Lord
God had entered into with
Israel. Yahweh means
“Eternal.” Its full signifi
cance is displayed in the
words, he called there on the
Name of the Lord (Yahweh),
the Everlasting God” -
Genesis 21:33 and again
“God said to Moses, “I AM
who I AM: ( or I will be what
I will be”) - Exodus 3:13, 14
and again, “I AM the Alpha
and the Omega”, says the
Lord God (the first and the
last), Who is and who was
and who is to come, the
Almighty (Revelation 1:8)
The Lord God has entered
into an everlasting covenant
to provide our needs, go
before us into battle, sanctify
and make us Holy; give us
peace, shepherds us, impart
to us His righteousness,
remain by our side for all
Eternity and to be our Great
Physician. In the New
Testament, “Jesus” is an
anglicized form of the Greek
transliteration of the ordinary
Hebrew name: Joshua” or
“Jehoshua” meaning
“Yahweh is Savior.” The
compound names of God are
applicable to Christ as illus
trated by the promises given
us.
Yahweh-Jireh- Philippians
4:19; Yahweh - Rapha
IPeter 2:24;Yahweh -Nissi-
John 10:4;Yahweh -Qadesh-
1 Corinthians l:30;Yahweh-
Shalom-Ephesians 2:14
Yahweh -Raah-John
10:11 ;Yahweh-Tsidkenu
Philippians 3:9;Yahweh-
Shammah-Matthew 28:20
