Grant Receives Appointment to United
States Air Force Academy
Joseph Grant
Joseph Grant, a mem
ber of Zion Baptist Church
in Marietta, has received an
appointment to the United
States Air Force Academy as
a member of the Class of
2014. He will be joining a
select group of our nation's
finest young people as he
takes this challenging and
rewarding step toward
becoming a professional Air
Force officer.
This appointment is
awarded to only about 1500
applicants out of 10,000.
Joseph is ranked num
ber five in his East Paulding
High School class out of 580
students. He received a con
gressional nomination from
Congressman Phil Gingrey,
our 11th District
Representative, and a sena
torial nomination from our
Georgia Senator, Johnny
Isakson.
Joseph has been in the
AFJROTC at East Paulding
High School for four years.
He has received several
honors, such as the
Tuskegee Airman Award,
the Air Force Association
Award, and the American
Legion Scholastic
Excellence Award.
He has also received
the University of Georgia's
Certificate of Merit, which
is only issued to students in
the top 10% of their high
school class. He was also
selected nationally out of
the top 1% of all Air Force
Cadets to attend a Joint
Service Camp. He currently
holds the rank of Cadet
Colonel in his AFJROTC
Unit.
Joseph is the son of
Leon Grant and Mrs. Vickie
Grant, and the grandson of
Leon and Odessa Grant.

Several tour guide busi
nesses provided a tour for
their customers or hosted the
morning's breakfast.
Mama "T's" Restaurant
owner Theresa Robinson,
took the trip herself and had
this to say about her experi
ence, "I fully enjoyed the
trip. The passengers acted
just like old friends. I will be
doing this again." Mama "T"
also provided salmon cro
quettes for this inaugural

grant funds.
The program will be
implemented by a team of
faculty members from vari
ous academic disciplines in
collaboration with Mercer
University School of
Medicine at its Savannah
campus. Other collaborating
partners include Chatham
Orthopedic Associates, City
of Savannah Recreation
Services, Chatham County
Anderson/Cohen Weight
Lifting Center Harvard
Medical School,
Georgetown University
Medical Center, Clemson
University and Auburn
University.
“As an HBCU and a
community leader in a region
with large representation by
underrepresented minorities,
both African American and
Hispanic, Savannah State is
committed to engaging in
meaningful research pro
grams that address relevant
public issues,” said SSU
President Earl G. Yarbrough
Sr., Ph.D. “Reducing and
ultimately eliminating health
disparities is a significant
public health issue that has
social and economic implica
tions.”
For Chetty, the $4 NIH
grant award was a major
achievement professionally
and personally. “When I
joined the Office of Research
and Sponsored Programs 10
years ago, my goal was to
increase external funding
from $4 million to $10 mil
lion annually within 10
years,” he said. During the
2009-2010 academic year,
Savannah State will receive
approximately $10 million in
annual funds for 37 research
grants. In the first half of this
academic year, the College
of Sciences and Technology
has received $14 million for
the next five years.
Established in 1890,
Savannah State University is
on the move to become the
best value-added university
in the nation.
The university’s
approximately 3,800 stu
dents are enrolled in 23
undergraduate degree majors
and five graduate programs
in three colleges: Liberal
Arts and Social Sciences,
Business Administration and
Sciences and Technology.
