Pres. Barack Obama
WASHINGTON, DC -
Recently in Baltimore,
Maryland, President Obama
announced details of the
Small Business Jobs and
Wages Tax Cut, one of his
new proposals to create good
jobs in America.
In Wednesday’s State of
the Union Address, President
Obama outlined a series of
ways he will fight to create
good paying jobs and contin
ue our economic recovery.
One of these proposals,
the Small Business Jobs and
Wages Tax Cut, will put more
Americans back to work by
giving businesses - particu
larly small business - a tax
cut for new hiring. The new
proposal will also provide tax
incentives for businesses to
expand wages for their
employees.
Through the Small
Business Jobs and Wages Tax
Cut: Businesses will receive a
$5,000 tax credit for every
net new employee that they
employ in 2010.
The total amount of the
credit for any one firm will be
capped at $500,000, to ensure
that the majority of the bene
fit is targeted at small busi
nesses.
Start -ups will be eligi
ble for half of the tax credit;
Small businesses that
increase wages or hours for
their existing employees will
be reimbursed for the Social
Security payroll taxes they
pay on real increases in their
payrolls. This bonus would
be based on Social Security
payrolls, so it would not
apply to wage increases
above the current taxable
maximum of $106,800;
Firms will be able to claim
the credit on a quarterly
basis, which gets money out
to businesses quickly and
provides and early incentive
to hire and increase payrolls.

The Junior League of
Savannah recently held its
62nd Annual Thrift Sale, its
largest annual fundraiser to
support its community proj
ects. This year's event raised
a total of $126,898.00 for
advocacy for women and
children.
“We are excited that this
year’s event was so success
ful, especially since the
money we raise is used to
fund our projects to help the
community.” stated Julie
Allen, current President of
the Junior League of
Savannah. “This event is not
just a fundraiser for us, it’s
also a community service to
offer merchandise at dis
counted prices. We have
shoppers who come year
after year and wait on line for
endless hours until the doors
open. We enjoyed visiting
with them and getting to
know them; these connec
tions are what make Thrift
Sale so valuable.”
Over 200 people turned
out for the Preview Cocktail
Party and Auction, which
takes place the night before
the Thrift Sale, to bid on
exceptional items donated by
close to one hundred local
businesses to support the
cause.
"We are immensely
appreciative of the support
this community has shown to
the League and our endeav
ors," Allen noted. "This
event could not have been a
success without the efforts of
hundreds of League mem
bers and community part
ners, particularly our plat
inum sponsors, Publix Super
Markets Charities, Levy
Jewelers and SunTrust."
The funds raised from
the 2009 Thrift Sale will go
towards community funding
that furthers the goal of advo
cacy for women and children
in need throughout the Low
Country, Coastal Empire and
Golden Isles.
Non-profit organizations
whose missions align with
this goal are encouraged to
apply to the Junior League
for funding consideration.
The Junior League of
Savannah is an organization
of over 1,000 women com
mitted to promoting volun
