Youth Commission, Safe Shelter and
Macy’s Says Love Shouldn’t Hurt
The Chatham County
Youth Commission, SAFE
Shelter and Macy’s sponsor
ing the kick off to the “Love
Shouldn’t Hurt”campaign
with a press conference on
Friday, February 12, 2010
during the opening of the
new Forsyth Fort and stage.
Forsyth Park.
Chatham County Youth
Commissioners wore T-
Shirts promoting this cam
paign in all of the County's
public and private high
schools and the Oglethorpe
Mall while handing out
Flershey’s candy kisses to
mark the campaign with the
idea,“Kisses, not Disses!”
Last year in Georgia,
there were 65 intimate part
ner deaths. Three of those
domestic violence-related
homicides were young
women under the age of 20.
One victim was only 17
years old when her ex
boyfriend killed her.
The Youth
Commission, SAFE Shelter
and Macy's reminds all that
domestic violence has no
typical victim. Victims are
old, young, educated, illiter
ate, male and female. Last
year SAFE Shelter provided
shelter and services to over
800 victims and their chil
dren. And most adult victims
say the pattern of violence
started when they were dat
ing.
If you need help or if
you know someone that
needs help, call SAFE
Shelter at (912) 629-8888.
The Chatham County
Youth Commission was
founded in 1992 by Dr.
Priscilla D. Thomas and the
Chatham County
Commission and is directed
by Alderman Van R.
Johnson, II to provide high
school aged youth of
Chatham County with a
vehicle to learn about gov
ernment, participate in the
process and to represent and
articulate the needs of youth
in this community.
Now 18 years and over
300 graduates later, similar
programs have been created
in Atlanta, GA; Gainesville,
FL; Prince George’s County,
MD; Fargo, ND; Newnan,
GA, Riverdale, GA and
Miami, FL. For more infor
