CHURCH NEWS AND OTHER FEATURES
Listen! -
Hear
Evangelist Rachel Thomas
Have you ever heard God
speak to you? In Revelation
3:20, we are issued an invita
tion from Heaven, “Behold, I
stand at the door and knock;
if any man hear my voice,
and open the door, I will
come in to him, and will sup
with him and he with me.”
The words, “if any man hear
my voice,” indicates that it is
possible for man to hear the
voice of God. In fact, it
sounds as if it is even expect
ed! This is a plea straight
from God; it is not something
that we should pass over
lightly.
There is no substitute
for hearing God's voice. We
might look around and see
God in His creation. As we
observe how the universe is
orchestrated, the planets in
orbit, the perfect design in
nature, we could be
impressed with the thought
that there must be a God!
That realization is wonderful,
but it is not substitute for
hearing the voice of God.
Perhaps we recognize
God's hand in an instance of
providential protection.
Maybe, He kept us safe in a
dangerous situation miracu
lously spared us when we
could have been involved in a
disastrous circumstance.
Can You
Him?
Recognizing that God pre
served us from harm and
even death, yes, I have been
in each of these situations,
but even that is no substitute
for hearing the Voice of God.
We thank God for those
blessings because we are sure
that He provided them.
However, not even all of
these evidences of God's care
and concern for our lives can
be a substitute for hearing His
voice speak to us.
In the Word of God, we
find many instances when
God spoke directly to man.
Think of Elijah, the prophet
of God. The Lord worked
mightily through him!
However, he never got away
from needing to hear the
Voice of God.
At one point in Elijah's
history, he told King Ahab
that there would be no rain
for three and one half years.
How could he presume to
make such a statement?
Because he said it “at the
Lord's command.”
Obviously, Elijah knew what
it was to hear the Voice of
God. He was confident
because the Voice of God
makes us confident!
Throughout the Word of
God, we find similar exam
ples. Think of Moses, out in
the desert herding sheep and
one day he saw a burning
bush that was not consumed.
Now, add the Voice of God to
the picture of Moses -
Suddenly, the whole
scene takes on meaning.
The purpose of the
burning bush was to get
Moses' attention so he would
hear the Voice of God. God

Black Marriage Day 2010:
’’Celebrate The Joy”
Bethel Missionary
Baptist Church of Savannah,
Inc. and Wedded Bliss
Foundation, Inc., will present
the Eighth Annual Black
Marriage Day celebration,
Sunday, March 28, 2010, at
5:00 p.m. with the theme
“Celebrate The Joy.” Pastor
Beverly Flowers of Asbury
United Methodist Church is
the guest speaker.
Bethel M.B. Church
will join activists in hundreds
of cities around the country to
highlight the benefits of mar
ried life and offer celebra
tions to strengthen and pro
mote marriage in
[Savannah‘s] Black commu
nity.
As in the past years,
Pastor Jerome William Baker
and the Bethel family will
show their appreciation to all
couples who have stayed the
course and kept their sacred
vows. We will acknowledge
the couple married the most
years, second most years and
the newest wedded couple.
There will be renewing of
vows, jumping the broom and
a three tier wedding cake.
This event will be highlighted
by a rousing sermon by an
Anointed Vessel chosen by
God for this occasion. We are
so elated and blessed that
Pastor Beverly Flowers has
accepted our invitation to
bring the message for this
service.
“Bethel will always be will
ing to promote activities and
programs that glorify God
and fellowship with the com
munity”, explained Deacon
Florida Hunt, Chairman of
the 2010 BMD Celebration.
"We're creating a cultur
al shift in the Black commu
nity to reconsider the benefits
of marriage and “Celebrate
the Joy” that exists in spite of
the pain we often experi
ence," Wedded Bliss
Foundation Executive
Director Nisa Muhammad
said. “Much of what we hear
about marriage in the Black
community is a blues song
about low rates, out of wed
lock births, escalating
divorces and how somebody
done somebody wrong. We
want to replace that blues
song with a love song of joy.
We want to “Celebrate the
Joy!"
Black Marriage Day has
been celebrated annually at
locally sponsored events
hosted by faith-based and
community groups on the
fourth Sunday of March since
2003. Marriage activists in
more than 300 cities partici
pated in 2009, Mrs.
Muhammad said.
