Corps of Engineers Renew Partnership

University and the U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers’ Savannah
District renewed their 20-year
partnership, committing both
organizations to enhance
career training and internship
opportunities for students at
the institution.
SSU President Dr. Earl
G. Yarbrough, Sr., and
Colonel Edward J. Kertis,
Savannah District command
er, signed the agreement dur
ing a ceremony on the campus
in the historical Hill Hall. The
ceremony took place on Feb.
19, 2010. Several Corps
members who are SSU gradu
ates and one of SSU’s
Engineering majors observed
the signing.
The partnership marks a
commitment by the university
and Savannah District to
enhance the preparation of
SSU students for careers in
I Yarbrough, Sr., and Colonel
engineering, science, technol
ogy and mathematics and
other disciplines through
employment opportunities,
internships, lecturers and field
trips. The partnership will
enhance the diverse work
force of engineers, scientists
and technicians and other dis
ciplines sought by the Corps
of Engineers.
“It’s critical for the
Corps to aid in the develop
ment of future engineers and
scientists who will sustain our
great organization,” said
Ralph Barrett, chief of engi
neering division with the
Savannah District. Barrett
serves on the advisory council
at the university and will par
ticipate in the development of
new or improved curricula.
“Both our organizations
stand to benefit from this
union,” said Dr. Yarbrough,
“in terms of opportunities for
Edward J. Kertis
our students as we educate the
next generation of engineers
and for the Corps who will
provide training and experi
ence for our young people.”
Colonel Kertis agreed
that the partnership mutually
benefited both agencies. “The
Corps is continually seeking
young engineers and scientists
who will help us provide qual
ity engineering services to the
Armed Forces and nation.”
The Corps is comprised
of 34,000 dedicated Civilians
and Soldiers delivering engi
neering services to customers
in more than 90 countries
worldwide.
The Savannah District
manages and oversees a
multi-billion dollar military
construction program at 12
Army and Air Force installa
tions in Georgia and North
Carolina.

Kidney Foundation,
Georgetown University
Hospital, and the Society of
University Surgeons
Foundation.
At Benedictine, he was
the first recipient of the Head
Master's Award. During his
tenure at BC, he received the
Latin, Chemistry and Spanish
Gold Medals and was one of
the ten outstanding seniors. He
played basketball for four
years and football for two
years. He was a captain and
company commander in the
Junior ROTC. Dr. Johnson
was the first recipient from
Savannah to receive the Mole's
Martin L. King Scholarship
from this national organization
of women.
Dr. Johnson is married to
Dr. Gloria Bowles-Johnson, a
practicing Ob/Gyn physician
at Georgetown University
Hospital. They live in
McLean, VA and they have
four children, Brittany, Bria,
Brandon, and Bryce.
He is an avid sports fan
and enjoys fishing and golf
along with his family. He is the
son of Dr. and Mrs. Lester B.

The combined choirs,

the music. The General
Chair for the Anniversary

African Methodist Episcopal

Wednesday, March 17, 2010,
7:00 p.m., with the Rev.
Franklin D. Blackshear and
the Mt. Tabor Baptist Church
in charge of the service; and
on Thursday, March 18,
2010, 7:00 p.m., with the
Rev. Waymon Hodges and
Brownsville Baptist Church
in charge of the service. The
anniversary celebration cul
minates on Sunday, March
21. A fellowship dinner will
follow the Sunday morning
worship service.
