Hungry Club Explores How We Are
Using Our Power in Savannah
on Saturday April 3, 2010, at
9:30 AM, in the
Multipurpose Annex of the
West Broad Street YMCA,
located at 1110 May Street,
near W. Gwinnett.
President Barack Obama
continues to deliver a mes
sage that says, “We Must
Become the Change That
We Want to See.”
We must begin to be
more vigilant and focused in
our visions of change and
progress beginning on the
local level. Forum partici
pants will look at how
power affects the individual
and the community, and will
engage in a number of exer
cises that will show the role
of power in our lives, focus
ing on some useful tools and
skills that will allow us to be
more successful in our
approaches to individual and
collective community devel
opment.
Glover holds a Master’s
Degree in Urban Studies,
majoring in community and
economic development. She
has been engaged in a vari
ety of projects in the com
munity, including the
Gentrification Task Force,
the Savannah
Entrepreneurial Center, the
Covenant With Black
Savannah, and Individual
Development Account small
business development pro
grams.

Williams Receives Outstanding
Georgia Citizen Award
On February 4, 2010,
Williams traveled to Atlanta
to participate in Savannah-
Chatham Day at the Capitol.
Senator Lester Jackson host
ed the visit with a full day of
activities including a special
awards ceremony with
Secretary of State Brian
Kemp, who presented
Williams and several other
deserving Savannah profes
sionals with the Outstanding
Georgia Citizen Award for
outstanding achievement in
their fields of profession or
community service efforts.
On January 4, 2010,
Williams celebrated fifty-
one (51) years of profession
al barbering service.
In 1958, Williams
studied barbering at the Area
Trade School of Denmark,
SC (now Denmark Technical
College). In 1959, he began
his barbering career as an
Apprentice at Lampkin’s
Barber Shop on West Broad
Street. He worked assiduous
ly to learn the techniques of
barbering, the skills required
to successfully manage a bar
ber shop, and how to retain
his clients.
On January 4, 1971, Williams
opened and began operating,
“Jake Williams Modernistic
Barber Shop,” at 1104
Montgomery Street. Dining
the past thirty-nine (39)
years, Williams has cut liter
ally thousands of heads of
hair, from elected officials
and pastors, to nationally
known personalities, from
great-granddads to their
great-grandsons.
Williams is the epitome
of leadership, professional
ism, character, and integrity;
and he continues to make a
positive impact on the
Savannah community.
Currently, Williams
takes care of his clients
Wednesday through
Saturday.
Williams has received
special recognition from the
Office of the Governor and
Georgia Secretary of State.
He has been highlighted in
The Savannah Tribune and
the Savannah Morning News.
During the 7th Annual Spirit
of Excellence Black Business
Awards, Jake Williams Hair
Center, Inc. was selected the
“2009 Business of the Year.”
Williams is married to
Sherrie High Williams. They
are members of Tremont
Temple Missionary Baptist
Church, where he serves as
an Usher.
