Promoted
to
Lieutenant
General
Walter E. Gaskin
Walter E. Gaskin was
confirmed by the United
States Senate on March 19,
and was promoted to
Lieutenant General on March
22, 2010, making him only
the fourth African-American
in Marine Corps history to
achieve three-star grade.
Lieutenant General Gaskin
has been appointed as the
next Deputy Chairman,
NATO Military Committee.
His previous command
was the Vice Director, Joint
Staff. Before being assigned
to the Joint Staff, he was
assigned to the 2nd Marine
Division, and Commander, II
Marine Expeditionary Force
(Forward)and Commanding
General Multinational Force
- West, Fallujah, Iraq.
Gaskin is a Savannah
native, and graduated from
Savannah State University’s
NROTC Scholarship
Program in 1974, and was
commissioned a 2ndLt. He
graduated with a Bachelor of
Science degree. In May
1977, he went to Okinawa
and served as the S-3 for
Logistic Support Units (LSU)
Echo and Foxtrot, 3d Force
Service Support Group. He
also served as the senior
watch officer in the 3d
Marine Division Command
Center.
He later earned a
Master’s degree in Public
Administration from the
University of Oklahoma in
1992. He also completed the
Senior Executive Seminar
from the JFK School of
Government, Harvard
University (2002).

9, 2010 the Black Expo Tour
2010 will converge on
Savannah with State of the
African American Awards
Business Breakfast at
Savannah State University,
and the Black Expo Launch
Mixer at the Ralph Mark
Gilbert Civil Rights Museum.
On April 10, The
Savannah Market will have an
opportunity to hear some of
the most prolific speakers of
our time featured in “The
Future of Black America
Panel” at the First Annual
Savannah Black Expo.
The panel will take place
Saturday, April 10th in the
Oglethorpe Auditorium,
Savannah International Trade
Center and Convention at
12:00 noon and will be moder
ated by Mr. Van Johnson,
Savannah City Alderman.

United Way Honors Volunteers, Appoints
New Members to Board of Directors
United Way of the
Coastal Empire hosted more
than 250 volunteers and sup
porters during its 72nd Annual
Meeting and Award Luncheon
today at the Savannah
International Trade and
Convention Center, honoring
community volunteers for their
hard work and dedication and
inducting new Board members.
The celebration also highlight
ed the work the organization
has done throughout the past
year and recognized the sup
port it received from approxi
mately 31,000 donors and 700
companies during its 2009
community campaign.
Outgoing Chairman of
the Board, Steve Eagle,
Executive Vice President of
Seacrest Partners, thanked all
individuals and businesses that
have helped United Way make
big strides in its push to create
long-term solutions to issues in
education and youth develop
ment, health and wellness, eco
nomic independence and basic
human needs.

come together today, give
thanks and recognition for those
that have served, and for those
that will serve, so people in
need can receive the services

Through the year-round effort
and caring, more people were
served, our services were
expanded; and together as a

financial support,” Eagle said.

ing the role of United Way's
Chairman of the Board to Dale
Critz, Jr., President of Critz, Inc.
He has been involved with
United Way of the Coastal
Empire for a number of years
and most recently served as
Campaign Chair in 2008.
Campaign Chair Jeff Kole,
President of Kole Management
Company, thanked a number of
companies and organizations
whose tremendous efforts
helped United Way raise $8.1
million in 2009 to support vital
programs and initiatives that
improve lives in Bryan,
Chatham, Effingham and
Liberty counties.
The meeting ended with
the introduction of the 2010
Campaign Chair, Camille Russo
of Alta Innovations. The
upcoming fall campaign will
showcase Russo and the vol
unteers who will help raise
funds during the 2010 cam
paign.

Frenchye Bynes
Mrs. Frenchye Mason
Bynes is a native of Jackson,
Mississippi.
She received her
Bachelor of Arts degree from
Henderson Business College.
She is the widow of Frank H.
Bynes, Sr. and owner and pres
ident of the Bynes-Royall
Funeral Home, Inc, the oldest
black owned funeral home in
the United States.
Mrs. Bynes is a member
of the Georgia Funeral Service
Practitioners' Association, Inc.
National Funeral Directors &
Morticians Association, Inc.
Deaconess of St. John Baptist
Church, (The Mighty Fortress)
Her most recent honors
include 2007 Spirit of
Excellence Lifetime
Achievement Award; 2005
Outstanding Business Legacy
Award of West Broad Street,
given by the Savannah
Chapter of the Links; 2006 she
received the 50 year member
ship Recognition Award from
the National Funeral Directors
and Morticians, 2004 Grand
Marshal for Martin Luther
King, Jr. Day Parade, and the
recipient of the Community
Spirit Award from the 100
Black Men of Savannah, Inc.
She is the mother of five
children; Mrs. Olga (Donald)
Bland; Dr. Frank H. (Gail)
Bynes, Jr.; Mr. Raleigh D.(Pat)
Bynes, (both deceased); Mrs.
Frenchye (Carey) Jones and
Mrs. Lisa (Anthony) Reid. She
has twelve grandchildren and
five great grandchildren.
