Dr. Bertice Berry
The Susan G. Komen
Savannah Race for the Cure
Committee is excited to
announce that Dr. Bertice
Berry will be the distin

this year's Survivor
Reception, Friday, April 16th
and Race day, Saturday,
April 17th.
Bertice Berry, PhD. is a
sociologist, an author, a lec
turer and an educator.
No one defies stereo
types, generalizations or
cliches more than Dr. Bertice
Berry. Growing up poor in
Wilmington, Delaware, the
sixth of seven children,
Bertice was told by a high
school teacher that she was
"not college material".
Fortunately, there was anoth
er teacher who believed that
she was destined for more.
Berry applied to several
schools without any idea
how she would pay the
tuition if she were accepted.
The day her application
arrived at Jacksonville
University in Florida, a
wealthy benefactor called the
Admissions Department
looking for a potential stu
dent "who could swim if they
had the right backing," and
might sink without it.
Bertice not only gradu
ated magna cum laude from
Jacksonville where she was
awarded the President's Cup
for leadership, she subse
quently earned a Ph.D. in
Sociology from Kent State
University at the age of 26.
Dr. Berry taught sociol
ogy and statistics at Kent, and
demonstrated that she knew a
few things about humor, as
well. Shortly thereafter,
Berry left Kent to become an
award-winning entertainer,
lecturer and comedienne.
From 1991 through
1994 she won the coveted
national Comedian of the
Year Award, and was also
named Campus Lecturer of
the Year and Campus
Entertainer of the Year.
Dr. Bertice Berry is also
the best-selling author of an
inspirational memoir; I'm On
My Way, But Your Foot Is On
My Head, and the hilarious
bestsellers Sckraight From
the Ghetto, You Might Be
Ghetto If and the sequel You
STILL Ghetto.
Her first work of fiction,

Step Up Savannah Staff Invited to
White House Forum
Dale Carlson-Bebout,
director of Step Up
Savannah’s Supporting Work
project, is among a select
group of policy experts,
small business owners, labor
leaders and others invited to
the White House for a March
31 forum on innovative
workplace practices.
The President and First
Lady are hosting the “Forum
on Workplace Flexibility” to
discuss policies and practices
that support working men
and women meet the
demands of work while car
ing for their families. The
forum, open by invitation
only to about 100 participants
from around the U.S., will
allow experts to share ideas
that ensure business success
while meeting the needs of
the contemporary workforce.
"Receiving the invita
tion to participate in a White
House forum next week is an
incredible honor personally
and for Step Up Savannah,”
said Carlson-Bebout.
“Millions of women
and men across the country
struggle to balance the
demands of their jobs and the
needs of their families. Too
often, caring for a child or an
aging parent can strain a
career—sometimes to the
point of job loss,” said
President Obama.
