Hughes Promoted to Lieutenant

Katrina Hughes was promoted
to the rank of Police
Lieutenant on April 2, 2010.
Hughes began her law enforce
ment career in 1986 with the
State of Georgia, Department
of Transportation.
A year later in 1987 she joined
the Savannah Police
Department.
During her career with the
Savannah Police Department,
now the Savannah-Chatham
Metropolitan Police
Department, Katrina has had
the opportunity to be assigned
to the Patrol Bureau, the
Support Services Bureau, and
the Criminal Investigations
Bureau. While in Criminal
Investigations she was
assigned to the Violent Crimes
Unit, Property Crimes Unit,
and TRAP Unit.
In 2001 Katrina was promoted
to the rank of Sergeant.
A year later she was selected to
oversee sworn and civilian
personnel in the combined
Career Offender Tracking Unit
[also known as COTU], Gang
Unit and the Criminal
Intelligence Unit.
She is a senior Criminal Justice
major at St. Leo University
and will graduate this summer!
Katrina graduated from
Savannah Technical College
with honors in the Master
Cosmetology program in
1997. She was also inducted
into the National Honor
Society of Vocational
Technical Institutes. Lt.
Hughes also completed the
Street Survival course at the
FBI Academy in Quantico
Virginia in 1993. She was
a 1980 graduate of Robert W.
Groves High School. She is
also the proud mother of two
children, 17 year old daughter
Kianni and 10 year old son,
Keon.

Miss America to Make Appearance
The Washington County
Elderite Association of
Sandersville, Ga. will sponsor
an appearance by Miss
America 2010 Caressa
Cameron on Friday, May 7,
2010 at 7 p.m. at the T.J. Elder
Middle School Gymnasium.
The school is located at
902 Linton Road, Sandersville,
Ga.
Tickets will be $15 for
adults and $5 for students. All
churches, organizations, and
the general public are urged to
attend. Surrounding towns,
cities, and counties will be wel
comed.

Healthy Savannah hosts
Community Forum
Citizens concerned about
their health and the health of
their community are invited to
attend a special Healthy
Savannah Community Forum
at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 29, at
the Savannah Civic Center.
Keynote speaker will be
Dr. Evelyn Lewis, Executive
Medical Director for the
Uniformed Services
University Center for Health
Disparities Education and
Research. Dr Lewis, a national
expert on the social, economic
and cultural influences on
health, will help citizens leam
how their health is affected by
factors like public policy and
the environment in which we
live.
The purpose of the forum
is to help people understand
what factors have the greatest
impact on our health in
Savannah. Participants will
also engage in active dialogue
around actions we can take to
improve our health individual
ly and within the communities
where we live.

dreds of community residents
in fitness activity and discus
sions around obesity, nutrition,
smoking, transportation, civic
master planning and other fit
ness issues that might affect
their health.
The tentative agenda for
the forum includes Malik
Watkins of the University of
Georgia; Dr. Michael Toma,
PhD on Armstrong Atlantic
State University on
Savannah’s Community
Indicators; Craig Clements on
Civic Master Planning;
Keynote address by Dr. Evelyn
Lewis. A facilitated discussion
with forum participants will
follow.
Healthy Savannah is a
coalition of more than 65 busi
nesses, nonprofits, healthcare
agencies, governments,
schools and neighborhood
organizations. It is an initiative
created in 2007 by Savannah
Mayor Otis Johnson.
African Americans are
29 percent more likely to die
from cardiovascular disease
than whites, prostate death is
twice as high, and African
American women have a high
er mortality rate from breast
cancer than any other f groups.
The community forum is
sponsored by The Junior
League of Savannah, The 100
Black Men of Savannah, The
City of Savannah, St.
Joseph’s/Candler Health
System, Memorial Medical
Center, GeoVista Credit
Union, Savannah State
University, and the A Phillip
Randolph Institute.
